why does the speedo needle in my truck bounce ? it needle bounces all the time . is the speedo itself wore out or is it the other end where it hooks to the trans ? or is it the cable ? or is it sumthing else ?

I would guess the cable. I have had "jumpers" like you are talking about and it was the cable that fixed it. I do not know what a worn out speedo would look like but maybe someone else can shed some light on that one.

Probably just the cable needing lube. Take it loose at the speedo end, pull out the inner cable, oil it up with either oil or white lube, and put it back together. Should fix your problem Robb!

Hey TN, is your truck a manual (I think manual cables are shorter than autos...)? If so, I can send you a cable to use (or gauge if that is the issue). I just pulled mine out with the engine swap, and it did not bounce at all. I can send it with George to Pigeon Forge if you want it.

something else you may check if lubing the speedo cable is unsuccessful is the plastic gear on the transmission output shaft. if it has missing teeth it can definitely do as you are describing. the gear on my output shaft is currently m.i.a. this seems to be a fairly common problem once that gear begins to age. if the gear looks ok try taking the cluster out of the dash & running the speedo head with a drill. you can get a nice consistent rpm with a drill and watch for the bounce.

I am actually having the same general problem. I see bounces when driving, but not with a drill hooked up to it. I have a '69 3spd in my '68 truck. I had to get a longer cable b/c the speedo gear is farther back on the truck. I lubed the hell out of my cable, still had the problem. Very strange. I'm just living with it for now, I am hoping to have a new tranny this week
