question about rear fleetside patch panels.
I saw a patch panel for the LWB 67-72 chevy trucks in the lastest catalog from chevy duty. there are two kinds. one is 29" tall and looks like it is almost half of the bedside. i was wondering if anyone has used one of these patch panels or knows someone who has and what they thought about them. i have a large dent on the rear of my bedside and thought it would be easier to put on the patch panel rather than put a lot of body filler on the truck. the price is $89.95 for the panel.

You don't say what you are putting it on but I assume that it is going on a LWB truck. If it is, then it will be fine. The quality seems to be pretty good on them and the stamping seems accurate. If you are putting it on ANYTHING else, forget about it. It will be wrong. The LWB trucks have a rounded leading edge at the bottom/front of the wheelarch whereas the SWB/Blazer/Burb/Panel all have a "sharp" edge on the bottom/front of the wheelarch and also a more pronounced "bead" on the lip of the arch. The LWB beds have a soft bead, almost smooth.

All the pickup bedsides and Blazer bedsides I have seen have had the same detail, in fact I used a pair of patches from a pickup box to patch my Jimmy bedsides. After alot of searching I finally found a brand of patch panels that had the beaded detail around the arch, problem was they were $90 each so I ended up finding someone to cut the panels out of a bedsides. Tri-plus brand panels DO NOT have the detail, I found that out the hard way.
How bad is the dent? It might be easier to invest in a stud welder dent puller and pull it out instead of cutting up your truck. |

I am putting the patch on a 1970 LWB. The dent is pretty bad, i ground off a crap load of bondo from an earlier attempt at repairing the dent and found the entire rear section was hammered around pretty good and i do not want to cover the entire rear section of the bedside with body filler. i have a stud welder and tried it, but had no luck. I think i am going to try the patch panel. thanks for the advise.
GEE_EMM, how hard was it to find someone to cut up some patch panels for you? |

It wasnt easy, the back half on most trucks is rusted out.
