Question about heads

If I get the stock heads on my 350 ported and polished will it help with any performance? Also the vortec heads that I keep hearing about. Is there a difference in vortec heads, or is a set of vortec heads a set of vortec heads. If I were able to find a set of vortec heads which ones would I need, and what might they come out of

not a pro, but port and polish will help your heads. depending on the size of the conbustion chamber (compression) will determine weather or not they are worth workin on. i believe a vortec head is a vortec head. they are the same. and they come out of newer trucks 95+ and run around 400ish used. if i am wrong some one please pipe up

An article online from Chevy high performance there is a Vortec head that is not as good as the others:
"For you junkyard hunters, be forewarned that some ¾- and 1-ton trucks came with Vortec heads equipped with a specially hardened exhaust seat that kills low- and mid-lift flow. Casting number 10239906 should be avoided."

I think the 062 heads are what you want. I'm not positive though, just make sure they are from a 350.

In a later issue CHP retracted that statement. The 906 Vortec heads are fine...no problem!

Good deal. I was just about to go rip the valve covers off my boat.

GM has recently introduced what they call the "Bow Tie" Vortec head. There's an article in the current issue of CHP. For all intents and purposes, it is a cast iron version of the Fast Burn aluminum head.
