I can't speak for Josh, but ... I recall he was saying something about MySQL optimization.

When you have a forum with hundreds of thousands of posts to parse in several tables (I'm assuming each forum has its own table of fields/rows/columns however you want to think about it), it obvious takes some CPU processing power to take care of it.

He's dealing with exams right now IIRC. The search feature was probably bogging down the server (remember the slowdowns last night? ugh!) and he turned it off again.

I've been so busy I haven't been able to read up on MySQL optimization. Meant to help with that, life has just been uber stressing. Maybe I can do it after surgery in the next week.
