Arrow Single piece drive shaft.

does anyone know if there is a single piece drive shaft out of a newer truck that would fit a SWB 71 truck with a TH350 engine? dont want to pay loads to have one made. will have to change the yoke im sure. but is there any other option then having one built?

thanks

joel

Need some more info. What happened to your driveshaft? Is it a two piece? I was under the impression SWB trucks all came with a one-piece? Did you use something other than a GM rearend? If you need your driveshaft shortened, I had mine done for $15 at a local shop. If you need it lengthened, I see your dilemma. Go to a 'yard and start measurin

Edit, when I put a 700R4 in my truck I had to find an automatic splined shaft so I thought, why not try to find one that will already fit, not sure on your tranny lenght, but trips to 3 yards didn't come up with a match. I ended up adding the automatic yoke and takin it to a shop.

hey Redneck,

the one in the truck is a two piece unit and the hanger bearing is toast. so i just thought maybe i will get a single piece, rather go that route. its the standard 12bolt truck rear end. TH350 with a 350CI engine. on a SWB fleet side truck.

Chevye, are you looking to sell one of those single piece units you have there? if so, how much and pics?

i thought maybe i could go with a SWB newer style truck with those aluminum ones?

i can't sell mine, i need em. i know "suicideD" had one for around $50 or so. just put a wtb ad up and i'm sure someone will reply. i have had driveshafts done for v8 s10's before for around $140. it would probably cost $100 to ship one from here to there anyway.
check with "billsbowtie" also, i got both of mine from him. he always has a ton of parts.

If your engine and tranny are installed in teh proper location on the frame, the drive shaft will need to be 4 foot 10 inches....first gen Camaro/fire bird (F body) had the same, and that would make me wonder about the 78 - 72 ( I think I got the years right) Nova and clones (X body) since the under pinnings were pretty much the same.

thanks guys,

im going to put up a wanted add for now i guess see how that goes.

how does that work now, with a single shaft when your rear suspension moves will there be enough room in that centre cross member where the shaft passes through? worried about it hitted the top of it if you hit bumps or something?

let me know.

no clue Joel. Never had to measure one. I wouldn't do the late model ones though becouse the stupid GM U-joints pretty much blow, and the replacements never seem quite right...you have to drop the shaft to lube it...so it never gets lubed.

I have never seen a swb with a two piece. Interesting. I'd call around to some local yards to see if they have a one piece. As far as I know you shouldn't have any problem with the center section hitting the shaft unless yuor truck is seriously lowered. Make sure it's for an automatic and you may have to still measure, I think some tranny's were different lengths back then??

1 pc. driveshaft

I used one from a 1966 Chevelle.
I had a custom one made for my 66 chevelle from dennys driveshafts.
The original one from the chevelle was a perfect fit in my 71 short bed
with turbo 350.
The chevelle is a big block with muncie 4 speed.
Much smoother and quiter than the 2 pc. shaft.

One thing to remember...a properly ballanced drive shaft, with all the u-joints and carrier bearing installed properly, will not only last for many years, but will hold up to gobs of power. If it is time to redo everything...all the joints and bearing, then it may be a good time to replace it...but IMO, it is a bit of a waste of $$ to replace the assembly when nothing is wrong.
I only say this becouse WAY too many ppl think that a 2 pc shaft is unsafe or a maintnance nightmare.

Chevye...the one from the GMC is 4 foot 10 inches...the rear U-joint is a couple years old, front one is pretty old.

I do have one, but mine was with the v-8 in the six cylinder position. Might not work for the standard configuration. I had to go look at my for sale page to remember how much I was asking.... I'll take 75.00 plus shipping.

http://www.suicided.com/forsale.htm

Thanks ChevyE for pimpin my stuff.... got a door skin installer I'll let you push also.
