Thumbs down First full tank and i've got gas in the cab!

I filled my new pickup up today and when i got in i smelled gas real bad. Thought it was just b/c i just filled up. looked between the bucket seats and i've got a pool of Fuel on the sending unit and draining down the tank.

It looks like it't comming from the electric connection of the sending unit and it pours out when i take a left turn. I've got another tank in the bed of the truck that came from a 67 and the one that's hooked up has all of the vents hooked up to it and they've been all plugged off.

should i switch tanks or sending units??

I would start with the sending unit,There is a big o-ring that goes with it that might be the culprit allso.

Do you have a vented cap? If everything's plugged off pressure can build if the cap isn't vented. You might try switching sending units, and installing it with a new seal..

i've got the locking cap that i used on my other pickup and no, it's not vented, i don't think.

who carries that big o-ring?

You might be able to special order the seal at a parts store, but I doubt they'll have one in stock. You can order one from www.gmcpauls.com for $2.95 plus shipping.

To remove the sending unit, first detach the fuel line and the brown wire. Then take a hammer and a big straight-blade screwdriver and tap on the tabs of the locking ring so that the locking ring rotates counterclockwise. You'll have to tap a little on one tab and then a little on another, working your way around. Once the ring rotates a little ways (somewhere around a quarter of a turn or so), it will pop loose.

Question Vented gas cap.

This is a new in pack vented chrome cap that will solve the pressure problem.
I had the same problem with my 68 when I put on a non-vented locking cap.

Yes, they make locking ones. You just have to make sure it is vented since they have both kinds.

I assume that is a stant ?
Would you be kind enough to list the part number.
I ask as I recently got what was supposed to be a vented cap for my 71 and it builds a LOT of pressure or vacuum depending on conditions and I'll bet it is either the wrong one or needs the pressure spring cut down.

Yes Joel, It is a perfect repo vented cap that I have used on all my trucks except the 72's. No leaks,
perfect chrome and if you wish to remove the warning label, no prob. Just not for 72 models, due to diff. size fill tubes due to Darn un-leaded fuel! I use this cap unless leaving the truck in a high crime area, ha-ha not likely up here. Then I would switch to the locking chrome if parked in such an area for a time if worried about a gas rip-off?
I think the plain chrome looks way better than the keyed cap, more original?

speaking of full tanks and gas leaks, when I fill mine up all the way fuel starts pouring out as it tops off.. Is this just the tank? I am concerned about my fuel evaporating from this.

DO NOT use the vacuum at the "do it yourself carwash" to suck the gas out of the cab.
