Column to floor shift backup lights?
Ok once again I have another question. My 3 speed column shift was move to the floor by the previous owner. I bought a new husrt indy shifter to replace the homemade looking one thats there now. The backup lights don't work and I know the switch for it is in the column. Is there a kit or any suggestions on how to make the lights work with the floor shifter?
Thanks, Mike

Here is one way to do it . . .
My PO did the same thing - he also wired in an illuminated switch for the BU lights. I trun it on for BU lights, they light up, it lights up, I back up . . . then I put it in 1st and drive off with the illuminated switch on and the back up lights on until I finally remember to look down at the dash bottom, see the illuminated switch ON, and turn it (& them) OFF.

Yea I was thinking about using a toggle switch but I know I will always for get either to turn it on or off.
I got to thinking, if there isn't a kit or any good examples out there, I might try to mount some type of push button where the shifter sits in reverse. That way the shifter pushes the button and the lights go on, when the shifter is in another gear the light is off. Going home the weekend to fiddle around. I will let everyone know what happens. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Mike

when i converted to a floor shift i used a lokar shifter, there was a kit that you could purchase with the mount, switch and hardeware i would assume that hurst would have a similar kit available for thier shiftey

When I looked on their site I didn't see anything. I'll have to go to the local A&A and look through their catalogs. I wonder if the lokar one would work on the hurst? I'll have to look into that.
Anyway if not this is the switch type I was thinking about link Thanks, Mike

Nevermind...I just found one from summit but it doesn't list the indy shifter kit
I guess I will call to see if it will work. Mike

If you want you can splice into the light green wire going down the driver side frame rail and just connect to the 4 spd reverse switch. I clipped mine and spliced on a section of wire to reach over to the reverse switch. Not hard to do and on the cheap as well.

Back up light sw.
You can use one off of a 4spd car. You will have to make your own brk. & make a connecting link out of 1/8" welding rod. There should be a 1/8" hole in the reverse arm to attach it to.

I have no idea how, but you obviously can get the backup lights to work with a Hurst shifter. My truck has a 3spd stick on the floor and the backup lights work exactly like they should.

Back up light sw.
On a 4spd the back up light sw bolted to the lower rear two holes on the side cover with a 1/8" actuating rod back to the reverse shift arm on the linkage.
You can make up something similar on a three speed. Rick Ca. |
