I bought another truck today!
second one in a week! Problem is now the really sweet deal is going to come next week when I'm out of cash for the purchase. I'll get pics of the 68 GMC I bought last week up soon as I can remeber to take my camera to work with me. I bought this 86 suburban tonight... was going to pull the motor as a donor for my Jimmy but I may just fix the tranny and drive it... anyone know of common overdrive problems with these trucks... he told me the high gear went out on a trip and he towed it home... hasn't drove it since... I backed it up in the drive way and pulled it forward??? any ideas?

Rebuilding the 700R4 is not cheap. Mine cost $1100 but worth every dime. It will knock out your teeth when it shifts at WOT. The OD clutches are burned. Probably tried to tow with it in OD. A big NO NO unless it's a 4L80E. Rebuild the tranny with a towing package. Just don't use OD to tow heavy stuff. Change the rearend gear ratio up to 3.73 or 4.11. The OD will help keep it drivable. The 3.73 will help with towing.
Now if it moves, you might be able to save it. Check the TV cable on the throttle linkage. If it is misadjust it wont shift into OD. The TV cable is the life of the tranny. Does it move in 3rd through all the gears? |

When my 700R4 went, ....it WENT. But I guess it's typical to need to get them rebuilt atleast once. But there is no way of limping it anywhere when it goes.

hmmm... dilemmas...
Well I didn't drive it around just moved it in the drive way so I don't know if it'll shift out of first.... I did put it OD first and it just revved the engine like it was in neutral... i dropped into D and moved it back up. I think I'll try and drive it home tonight and see what happens and what it is really doing.. Maybe it's something simple(not my luck) but I stole this truck as it is... if the tranny is shot. I can put the engine in the Jimmy and save the body for my next project.

Well
I can get a rebuilt 700r4 from O'reilly's with my discount for $591. with the converter. I did the Kelly blue book thing on it and I will end up paying 1/2 of what the truck is worth after the cost of repair!! cool
