That's not acurate.
I think that is model number.
the 4 doesn't mean step side. It means cab and box bed IIRC

That aint all correct but some of it is.

It's almost a cross decoding style of a GMC vin with the 34 and a chev vin with the 4. But vins dont tell you what kind of box...just that it had one.

But years are done different on GMC vins, They can be different in 70 and 71 so it doesnt work for that either...good thing I know how to do any version off top of my head.

Glad you pointed that out. That stepside number was alway throwing me off. I guess you can't believe everything you find on the internet.

Does anyone have a VIN decoder that is similar, but accurate?

Herers one from the old format home page. It looks like the 4 represents stepside for model # rather than VIN. John

I'm trying to get some more info about my 69 GMC truck I just bought. I've been all over and nobody seems to have any information on GMC vins, just Chevy. the vin number is CS10D ZA26020. Can anybody tell me anything about this truck? Any help would be great. I'm trying to rebuild it and get it back to original specs. The truck is a mess and I've got a LONG way to go!

Well, the VIN won't give you too much info that you don't already know...however, here is a page from my 69 GMC owners manual.

Hmmmm, can't find the pics. Probably on "her" computer. With any luck, some one saved it.
Off the top of my head...
CS10D ZA26020
C 2 wheel drive
S inline 6 powered
I think 10 was 1/2 ton
I think d was fleet side bed maybe?
Z is 69
A was atlanta assembly maybe?
26020 is the consecutive number on that plant.

Rod should be able to help...he knows the GMC numbers by heart.

Not a problem with the GMC vin...there are too many different styles of GMC vins to try and make one decoder as far as I'm concerned....Well here you go.

C = Conventional cab
S = six cyl
1 = 1/2 ton gvw range
0D = fleetside box
Z = Fremont assembly plant
A = 1969
26020 is the sequence number.

and on the model number decoding,..box or body type are 2 characters long...that meaning in the model number on glove box sticker..a fleet side is 34......step side is 04.....cab and chassis is 03.

Thanks a bunch guys! That did help. I've got some strange things with this 69 that I never had with my other. I know there's been a lot of after-market work done on the electrical, so I've got my hands full. Where's a good spot for picking up matching parts? The guy that owned it before me loaded it with Chevy parts. I guess I should probably post this in a new thread too.

That's one of those 69-70 71 GMC numbers that throw people off. I had to look twice....lol. That "A" kinda made me think...it's done in the old style when they went back to the older 67 style of decoding vins where they use a A for 69, B for 68, and C for 67....odd style..but you'll get it....you watch enough of my posts on this.

And lots of chev parts interchage..just not the front clip typically....you gotta go one way or the other typically...Chev or GMC.

Yeah, the vin numbers for these old GMCs are pretty tricky. I've been ALL over the Internet and nobody has any info at all. By luck, I came across you guys and, since I plan on getting this truck fully restored, I think I am here for the long haul! <grin>

I don't mind interchanging the "hidden" parts between Chevy and GMC, but I would like to replace the noticable pieces. For instance, it's got a HUGE old Chevy steering wheel on it and when they put the steering wheel on it didn't have a horn so they rigged a button on the dash. That steering wheel and that wiring job are both gonna have to go! There are lots of little things like that and like the seat belts are Chevy emblemed too. I'd prefer it to be GMC where it ought to be.

Seat belts only have GM sticker on them...so no need for a change there....I assume there original....and horn buttons interchange also. As for a Chev emblem on the seat belt...hmm ....are the all metal connectors with NO platic cover ...makes me think there 67 seat belts..thats about the only year that didnt use plain GM sticker on the female part of the seat belt. Depending on the steering wheel..maybe its a 67 style also with a circular horn button and three poles compared to a correct 69 with 2. But I dont know anything.

Hey Rod,

They are plastic covers on the seat belts, but not plastic covers that I've ever seen in a truck. The belts are what appear to be a saddle color maybe? Certainly didn't come with this. The exterior of the truck is yellow and the interior is black, at least on the doors and floor. I'm assuming those are probably the original colors, but I think the door panels and carpet have both been replaced and they also don't appear to be GMC manufactured and possibly are scraps from some other vehicle. The inside of this truck looks like a junkyard smorgishboard, with bits and pieces taken from different models, different years, and some guesswork. I would at least like to replace the seat belts and steering wheel. The rest I'll just pick and choose as I've got the money to spend.
