question about a number etched in my 67 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

on the back wall behind the seat on the passenger side appears to be a Social Security Number etched into the body. Anyone ever seen something like this done? I'd take a picture of it but if it is in fact someones SSN, I dont want to put it out there. But I found that to be very weird.

DUring the late 70's and mid 80's it was pretty popular thing to buy an "engraver" or "etcher" and put your Social Security number on your property as proof it was yours if it was ever stolen.

Never understood it, but I do recall a friend engraving his Soc. Sec. Number on his bike.

Maybe that's why it's there?

25 years ago I took an engraver to my bike and every major piece has my S/S number eched in it for prosperity. It was the thing to do back then, these days I have a fit if anyone even askes for it..........."The times they are a changin"

My dad would do that. I etch my PA driver license into all of my guns and important things as any COP can find you with a DL# but no COP can find you with a SSN.

In all reality, they can't legally use your SSN as ID like that. a drivers license number is better as an ID# becouse it is a legal ID.
Granted, SSN will work, and most cops don't even know you aren't supposed to use it, but like mentioned, it's a bit of a bad idea to let ppl have your SSN anymore.

armyavncowgirl, does the Bell County hot check department still require a ssn and drivers license number on checks? When they passed that back in '99 or so it p!ssed a LOT of ppl off. I stopped using checks at that point.

Yeah they do! And it irritates me because now its printed on all my danged checks. Thats why I dont use checks unless I absolutely have to.

Untill a couple of years ago in OK. your SS and DL were the same.Used to weld or paint your # on stock and flatbed trailers for all the world to see.
