Saginaw 3 Speed drainplug help
I'm out today changing fluids and I finally get to the transmission and I can not find the drainplug . There is one plug about halfway up on the right side which I know is the fill. I have search google and this site tryin to find it without any help. A few pictures I found show the plug on the left side toward the front but mine just has a flat spot in the case. I have went over the thing very closely and can't seem to find anything. I de-sludged the case and still nothing . Did GM make them without plugs?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I don't know about 68haywagon, but I would really appreciate it if you would post a pic of the 3 speed tranny drain plug. I will have to deal with this same issue soon enough.
Thanks

68haywagon,
What fluid are you going to use in the 3 speed tranny? I have heard some guys talk about ATF or a heavy motor oil. I am not sure what I would use, yet. By the way, I noticed on your profile picture that your truck has no rearview mirror. My truck never had one installed. I think it is a pretty quirky thing about 68. Yours either, it looks like.

I was going to use 80-90w for it because thats what my manual says to use. I believe there is ATF in it now because there is a leak and the fluid is red . But since I can't find the plug to empty it, I might just top it off with ATF so I don't mix the oils.
If I can empty it I will replace with the 80-90W. I don't see how ATF can hurt it though, I believe newer cars use it in the trans now. My rearview mirror was the windshield glue type. It was in the glove box when I bought it. I glued it back up. I don't think it was original though. I have some rv mirror option (4B298F) or something like that. I can't read the description. But with that option I don't believe you got a in cab mirror. I notied you dont have the same exterior mirrors I do though. I guess GM is just didn't like people to look at the F**ds behind them . I'm heading home again this weekend, so I will let you know the outcome with the trans. Mike

Not sure, but I bet your outside mirror(s) are the listed optional equipment. I am pretty sure the round ones like mine were the basic equipment. Mine had one on each door, but the pass side has broken and I have removed the arm for now. So I really can't see any F@rds creeping up behind me!
If your rearview were standard, it should be screwed to the cab ceiling, between the visors.

Yea the outsides ones are listed as an option, but with that option I don't thinkt here was a inside mirror- no screw holes in the roof. Thats why I think the inside one is not original, it's glued to the windshield.

Your Q's been answered?
Pull the lower bolts where the tail bolts to the body to drain the oil. Use 80-90W, ATF or syncromesh is for the newer 5sp with closer tolerances. |
