Throwout Bearing ???
Is there a golden rule for which throwout bearing to use with the 2 different common styles of clutches? IE: short with diaphragm, long with Borg&Beck (3 finger) or does it vary with cars/trucks or 10/11/12 in applications. I would like to use this brand new clutch I have (11") from a '70 4-4-2, but I don't want to use the wrong TB. Any clutch gurus out there? Thanks, Hot Rod

If it needs the short one,a long one won't fit.

That is a good question. I know by personal experience that you can install a long one in place of a short one as I did it. It makes the clutch partially disengaged and the truck will go but the clutch slips. I bought the long one based on the parts house recommendation and it was supposed to have worked with the diaphragm clutch. Well it did not work, and I don't know how to tell short of installing the clutch and checking before buttoning up. Otherwise if you buy a clutch kit, you should be all set.
Hopefully someone has a sure way of telling which one to use. Jim |

If the diaphram fingers are "flat" use the long bearing, if the fingers form a cone shape pointing out, use the short bearing.

That's great info, since my throwout bearing needs to be replaced also.

Spend the extra dough,and get the "good" bearing.It's no fun changing a growler a few months down the road.Just did it,cheapo lasted 6 months.
