Car alarm install

i'm trying to install a car alarm, and i'm not terribly HIP to electrical stuff... my cousin is the car alarm expert and he's not terribly willing to help (and well its been in the box forever 'cause he doesn't wanna fool with it all, i can't blame him )
My dad told me he doesn't want me to just start ripping into the wiring harness, 'cause if i botch that up then i'm f****** screwed. He's never done this before, he went and looked, he don't know what to do with that.

Anyone? Anyone?

Bah nevermind. Its gonna be an impossibility without my cousin, so i gotta wait till he decides he wants to stop being a pothead loser and do something constructive.

Oh and don't worry, he won't have red eyes and be near my truck. That's a fact, jack.

i would take it back and get the simpler truck alarm, them car alarms have too many wires...

i have one that i bought for my blazer that has remote door locks, but i havent felt like messing with it...maybe this summer

Wires at the steering column are
12 AWG Red - Constant 12v
12 AWG Pink- True Ignition 12v
12 AWG Purple - Starter (Could also be yellow, depends on year)
20 AWG Black (ribbon connector on column, wire on the end of it - Horn, pulse ground to it, must use a relay

Parking Light Switch
16 AWG Brown - Parking Lights 12v
16 AWG White - Negative Door Trigger, goes grounded when door is opened.

Door Locks
Click the switch and listen in the car, if you don't hear a clicking noise coming from a relay it means you have a 5 wire reverse polarity locking system. You will have to go to the door boot and if I remember correctly, the wires are Black w/white stripe and blue. I can't remember which does lock and which does unlock. I think black w/ white stripe does lock, but test it. You'll need to cut the wires and get two relays or use a DLS (Door Lock Socket, some alarm have them built in too) The green and white wires handle lock, blue and brown handle unlock. The white wire goes to the lock wire coming from the switch, the green goes to the other side of the cut wire. The blue and brown handle unlock. Brown goes to the wire from the switch, blue to the other side.
If you click the locks and hear a relay clicking, look high in the drivers kick panel towards the door opening, there should be a pigtail hanging with three wires. Blue, Orange w/ black stripe and Black w/white stripe. You will need to pulse 12v to Black w/white stripe to lock the doors and pulse 12v to blue to unlock the doors, again check. It's late and I can't be for sure if black does lock and blue does unlock. You can get constant 12v from the Orange w/ black stripe

Dang Bagd74Jimmy. It sounds like you know your way around the wiring harness. What do you do? I would have to spend some quality time with my Fluke to find that out.... or look at the diagram.

i installed my Viper 790xv alarm in about a day. it sucked cause i'm color blind. the only thing i didnt hookup was the remote start. i even installed power door actuators

its a wonderful alarm with MANY options and a 2 way remote

I work for a car stereo shop in San Antonio, I've been there 8 years. I install probably 20 alarms a week. I could do a basic alarm in a Chevy truck from 73-02 in about 45 mins. Alarms are easy on these vehicles, it gets harder on the newer 03 and up GM trucks, they have a databuss system in them that a lot of things work thru, thus you have to interface with this with modules or resoldering on boards, interfaces are much easier and less time. If anyone on here needs help with audio, security or video just let me know and I'll see what I can do to help.

I put one in my truck I nabbed off eBay for $10 or so.....Ungo's then-best unit new in the box.
It took me about two days to get all the wires where they needed to go.

About all I can tell you is..... it's not all that hard if you take a few wires (or one system) of the alarm at a time and wire it right.
By right I mean get good wire (I nabbed some teflon/silver plated off eBay), solder all your connections, use heat shrink wherever you can, and use 3M electrical tape.
Don't forget a grommet for the power, ignition, horn wires that pass through the firewall.
One thing you might consider.........mine has a relay behind the glovebox that controls the starter-interupt feature of the alarm. Yours probably too.
This relay plugs into a standard relay plug.
Get to know this relay (it's function and operation) and be able to get at it.
If this relay goes south......truck will NEVER start.
Know which two sockets on that relay plug to jump with a short piece of wire to get the engine running. A piece of wire or a spare relay hanging on the harness.

Bah screw the starter interupt and all that jazz. I'm just gonna hook up the parking light flashers, a siren, and thats it.

So one more follow up question before i dive into this tomorrow: I can just leave all the wires on the alarm block that i'm not using unhooked? I can just use the wires for power, lights, and siren?
