I've been scratching my head over this one for a while. The tail/bu/dome/dash lights have not been working for the past several months.

Head/turnsignal/flasher/brake lights are working fine, along with gauges, wipers, heater, radio... The instrument panel generator light stays on, but not bright--just very dim. Fuses are all ok and I have poked around for a loose wire or ground, but haven't found anything.

For a short while the gauges were not functioning properly (when I turned on the headlights the fuel gauge went to empty), but this has resolved itself somehow and has not been a problem recently. What have I missed? Where should I be looking?

Sounds like a bad ground somewhere. Keep checking wires.

I have seen a post that mentioned that there are 5 ground straps on the truck. I have found 3 -- 2 in the engine compartment and one near the spare tire. Anyone know where are the others?

There should be one on the passenger side, right around the front cab mount? At least that's where mine is. Going back together, I'm gonna put two to the rad support, two to the frame, two to the cab, and two to the bed. I know, it's a little over kill, but I don't want to crawl under my truck if I don't have to. Hope this helps?

Replace the fuses even if they look okay. The PO told me that the backup lights didn't work for the entire 20 years he owned the truck. I replaced the bulbs, cleaned the sockets and they still didn't work. Looked at the fuse and it looked good. Replaced it anyway, and ta-da! the lights work now.

I have replaced the fuses to no avail...

A neighbor of mine with an old Nova said it was behaving similarly, and he replaced the canceling cam in the steering column and it was cured. I have a little diffulculty believing that is going to fix my problem??? My turn signals all work properly and I would hate to tear into the column. Could there be any chance that would work in my case?

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Yesterday I replaced ALL fuses and I got all the lights back, but there was still a short as the dash turn signal indicators stayed on when the headlights were turned on -- the fuel guage would also go to empty. This was my original problem that started several months ago.

After poking around some more under the dash I noticed a black ground wire coming from the panel cluster wires. It was attached to the metal dash with a CLIP and was not grounding. Once I hit the clip and metal dash area with wire a brush (and put a screw through it) every thing works fine.

Can't believe GM attached a ground wire with a clip instead of screwing it in...poor design IMHO.
