72 eaton 3/4 full floater axle locker

anyone know who makes a locker for this beast. i have been told to stuff the insides with 14bolt goodies. where is a good place to get these cheap and what all do i need. Diff? axles? bearings? will it fit to the original drums?

This is being considered by a lot of people. Evidently the carriers are the same between the 14 bolt and eaton, so you use the original eaton carrier and 14 bolt detroit, then use the axles from the 14 bolt which are only slightly longer than the eaton and supposedly will fit. or you could find a used eaton w/ detroit and install. got mine for $200 shipped from another board member.

1986 K30, 350/400/205 dana 60 and 14 bolt. I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone.
1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed.

1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm

so all i have to do is buy a detroit locker for a 10.50" 14 bolt and get some axles as well and shove it inside. will the eaton gears bolt onto detroit?

the eaton and 14 bolt's detroit locker is a lunch box type, it fits inside the stock open carrier and the ring gear bolts to that. they will swap back and forth.

Hey big chev where are you located??
Backbirds can get you new detroit and has 14 bolt axles lying around.
around 350 for detroit and 75 for axles + s&h

Just an option

eaton vs 14 BFF

I'm probably missing something very obvious, but why not just bolt in a 14 bolt with a Detroit locker and be done. They want $150 at our local yards for drum to drum rear axle with the Detroit. You do have to take them out yourself.....and they are heavy.

Part of the obvious part that above. Eaton H052s weigh less than 14bFFs, yet have comparable strength. I've read & heard reports from those who have swapped Eatons for a 14bFF that found the 14bFF made the truck's ride harsher.

Also, one must source a 14bFF from a GM one ton to get the correct wms and spring perch width for a 67-72 GM 4x4. And many folks find Eaton parts cheap.

I was thinking to just use the axle, and bolt it to the existing springs. Hopefully that would not change the ride quality and keep the mods to a minimum. What are "correct wms", pardon my ignorance.

They are heavy. I believe in the 450-500 pound neighborhood with the drums attached. I don't know how much lighter the Eaton is, but it is lighter.

The Eaton offers better out of the box ground clearance than the 14 bolt. Both can be shaved for more, but the Eaton will always have the most.

kinda splitting hairs, but I have seen a couple 14 bolts spit the axletubes out of the housing under (severe) load. One in person and a few more at pirate4x4. don't have to worry about that with the Eaton.

I have an Eaton that is supposed to have a detroit loker that I would sell. If your'e interested I can take it apart to see what is actually in it.
