t-case rumble

i have a np205 in my truck behind a NV4500. it is fairly quiet about 60 or so but around 70+ MPH it gets pretty growly. it quiets down if you put a little pressure on the shifter. is this in the shifter and the bushing or the actual gearcase? any idea of how to quiet it down. also i have no shifter boot right now, just an old pair of shorts plugging the hole. thanks
Ryan

Ryan, when my truck ran both the 465 and the 221's shifters would make noises. I'd usually lean my leg against them to make it stop, but I have seen people wrap pipe insulation around them before, and it works pretty good (buddy's '79 F250 w/ NP435 and NP205 has it).

"i have no shifter boot right now, just an old pair of shorts plugging the hole." LMAO Get a bigger pair of drawers? Sorry, had to dig on you for that one.... My whole truck would growl at 60-70 and no telling where all the noise would come from.

Are you running synthetic fuilds or just 80-90? Was that 205 twin-sticked by chance? I also would look at the shifter bushings, maybe throw some nylon washers in there if there is slop.

Thanks for the responses. the t-case isn't twin sticked. i htink my problem lies in the busing in the shifter, there is a lot of slop in the shifter, so i think some brass or nylon washers are in order. i have an extra bracket for the NV4500/205 combo from AA so i might try to fab up a replacement pivot point that is better bushed, so to alieviate the noise. thankfully the truck is quiet and smooth other than the shifter, all the way up to 80-85 on the freeway

oh yeah, it has synthetic castrol gear oil in the t-case

If I'm on a road trip I put a work glove or a chopper over the shifter. Around town I just deal with it.

I made some nylon bushings but unless I just pumped it up with grease it makes noise.
