If I want to put a srt of 20 inch wheels on my 71 C10 how wide can I go? What does it mean by back spacing.

Backspacing is the distance from the mounting pad or surface to the inner most edge of the wheel. MiniTruckin has a good article in the current issue about measuring backspacing and should really help in determining the right size. Something else to keep in mind is how much drop you have. The more drop you have the more critical the measurments become. Hope this helps

If your looking to run 20's all around, then 20x8's in front w/5.25 b.spacing. In the rear anything wider than 8's usually means 9.5" minimum. Although a 9.5" wheel will fit the b.spacing will vary according to ride height. On my 67 I have 20x10's w/6" of backspacing. From the front, the wheel has the same spacing as a stock truck ralley & I widened my wheeltubs to accomodate the offset. FYI: this set-up worked great when i swapped it on to my 68 beater(5/7 drop) but on my 67(approx 8/10 drop)the rear b.spacing would work better @ 6.5" because the truck sits so low that the tires are actually rubbing the inside bed wall & I didn't consider this as I was mostly worried about the wheeltubs clearing. I have 5.5 backspace on my 17's and you would not want to go any wider. Its about 1/2 inch from the inner wheel well (in back)
