Question Transfer case.

I'm going to go look at a 1980 K5 tomorrow. It has a 350- 4 speed manual. What transfer case would this truck have? And is it a good one?

Sweet! It is rusty from what the guy says, but is supposed to run real good. It comes with a plow. The guy wants $500 for it. As long as the body is not falling off the frame, I might make it my new daily driver.

It was a good trail rig. And that's about it. She was REAL rough. Is a 4.1L a 292? That's what it was supposed to have.

If it is an '80 it might have full time 4x4 (no lockouts) if it does then you will have a NP203 chain drive case not bad but weaker than gears of course. Have you checked the engine? a 4.3 v-6 is a 262 ci so a 4.1 might be a 250ci.

Nope.. not a NP205

Look,
Your dreaming to think that a K-5 that was made in the 80's has a NP205 as standard equipment. More than likely the truck will have a chity NP208. Chevy mixed 203 and 205 in the 73 and up blazers. In the late 70's and early 80's they install NP208 as standard equipment. Chevy still use the 205 in there 3/4 and 1 ton truck until they made the big mistake with that crap IFS system. Why in the hell would some engineer wanted to make a truck act and drive like a car is beyond me. People can spend all the money they have and still cannot get the proformance and strength that a straight axle can give
Now there nothing to say if the current owner decided to install a 205 in the K-5. You just don't know with used vehicle these days. Also, if the owner doesn't have a clue what he has in the truck. I'm pretty sure it just has what it came from the factory.
Please take the time and effort to do some reseach. Learn what about the goodies you and how to ID them. Learn to trouble shoot a vehicle promblems before you end up spending more than you wanted for the thing. Just because its a good buy, doesn't mean that the seller has your best interest in mind. Hell, try to get it for less?? Hope this help.. Rock on people!!!

ALL 1980 GM 4WD trucks came with NP205s. 1979 was the last year for the NP203, and the NP208 started in 1981. It will have a slip yoke rear output though. 1980 was also the last year for 12 bolt rears.

It is always interesting to see someone like MADRAD post incorrect information with such authority.

As soon as my replacement arrives and is installed, I will have most of my old one. I say "most" because I know for a fact that some of it will be unuseable (hence the replacement). What do you need?

You cann't always trust what you read!
My 79 was built in the later part of the production run and is built with parts combos from the 80 model year(found this out trying to buy parts from a local dealer)!
My drive train option was not avalible in 79 but it was in 80 (again according to the dealer)but is a 79 model k20.
The truck was all original with matching #'s when I bought it from the original old farmer owner.

Just trying to say you cann't always trust what you read!

My 1979 K10 came with full time, chain driven transfer case. It was a 350/350 auto. I converted it to part time using one of those kits. The transfer case lasted about two years after that when the bearings went bad. Swapped it for a 205. I wish I would have not let that truck get away . . .
