Oil Pressure sensor question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm installing my new crate engine and have run into a few problems. One of them is really bothering me - my oil pressure gauge has a metal tube coming from the firewall (with corkscrew things) to what looks like a flare nut thing with threads on it.

Everywhere I look, I keep finding the same sensor that screws into the block and has an electrical connector at the top. I think my oil pressure thing is mechanical not electric right? Kinda new to this...

What do I need, and where can I find this part. I've tried junkyards, vendors, and running out of ideas. Am I the only one with this kind of oil pressure gauge?

You do have a mechanical oil pressure guage. What you will need is something that looks like this.

You should be able to find it at a good hardware store or a good auto parts store.

Hmm... that helps but what threads need to be on each end? Is there a board vendor that sells these so I can make sure I get the right on?

Probably going to have to buy a kit - usually you can get one @ the parts store with a plastic tube - just use your old copper one. It will come with several fittings for the block/guage and it will come with the ferrules also. usually areound $10 for the kit.

I know for a fact NAPA has them hanging on the rack with thier guages

I lost mine, and I tried finding one of these at hardware and auto parts stores with no luck. The male end that threads into the block is 1/8 NPT and the female end that accepts the fitting on the end of the tube is 1/16 NPT (extremely small and rare). I was lucky and ended up finding mine again.

If you can't find one in a wrecking yard, I'd recommend trying to buy one from www.gmcpauls.com or LMC or somebody like that.

I've tried both of them and can't find the part. I'll just keep looking, perhaps an Autozone or Checkers or something in another city may have some...

You might start a thread in the Parts Board to see if anyone has one laying around.

Thanks, I'll see what I can find but it's a good suggestion. Can I get some kind of conversion to switch this to electrical, seems there is no shortage of those.

Part number 5182K835 from www.mcmaster.com MIGHT work, but you'd have to cut the fitting off the end of your oil line.

What you need is what da-burb shows a picture of, 1/8 pipe to 1/8 tubing compression fitting. Remove the old nut from your line with a tubing cutter. The original style is almost impossible to find.
