Bed wood finishes

I have seen a few posts of photos of bed wood the last few days. What did you guys use for varnish. I went to local Marine West store today. They have the boat stuff for $15.00 a pint and calls for 3 coats. Must be something better.

You can buy exterior uv resistant marine urethane finish at a hardware store alot cheaper than that. I paid less than that for a quart.

Been there.... dont that!! A varnish will never hold up to your liking because you have to recoat every so often because the stuff loses its strength on fighting the elements. I used a supposed marine urethane product on my wood and it lasted a whole 30 days before water had gotten underneath and started to turn the wood black from mildew. What I did was strip everything, restain, and I shot it with automotive clear. I used almost a gallon of that stuff coating all the sides. And if you don't know anything about prices of auto clears, well lets just say its double what you were quoted for the varnish. Expensive yes!! But let me tell you, this stuff has held up great now!! Theres some certain procedures you must follow when trying to spray auto clear on wood, but its nothing major.

What prep is necessary to spray over wood? Probably can't use an oil base stain but how about a water born stain?

I picked up some poly-urethane at the local hardware store. It "says" it protects against UV rays. Cost $35-$40 a gallon. Thought that was expensive, but if it works, what the heck? Looks good after 3-4 coats.

bruce horkey says 5 coats minimum. start with like 75/25 varnish/thinner, for 2 coats, then one of 90/10 varnish/thinner, then 2 of 100% thinner. thats what i did, and im happy with it. good luck, Ben

If it's going to be rained on or washed-----spar (or any other kind) varnish will not last. Cali_surfer is right--use clearcoat.
