NOS Tailgate-WA

If anyone is looking for an NOS TG, you know, the guys that just wouldn't have a repro...I saw one for sale at the Monroe Swap Meet. It is in the Eastside Pickup Parts booth and only $975. That is not a misprint...$975.
So just contact me if you want their phone #.

I was there, (Monroe Auto parts swap meet May 14 '05) picked up my 2 1/2 drop spindles and disc brake conversion stuff for my 69 GMC. Which is currently in pieces and boxes getting ready for the frame blast and painting. Also got my 67 rh hood hinge. I had a good ol time.

That was sarcasm.I just don`t get it.The repros are lighter weight. But,who cares if you`re not using it as a truck? If you are using it as a truck,do you want to use a $975 tailgate?Don`t get me wrong.I`ll take OEM over repro anyday.I`m sittin`on a N.O.S.tailgate I bought in`84 for $125 at the dealer.Good used ones are hard to find. But,not that hard.In time, they come around.

S-K:
I agree completely. The new repros are very nice, not that much lighter and look great, because they are straight & smooth with no 30 yr old dents/dings/and bends.
By-the-way, would you take $150 for your NOS TG?
OK, I'm gone.

Back before this forum, shortly after I first got my truck, I was at a swap meet at the fair grounds in St. Paul. (Actually it is in Falcon Heights but that is another story).

At that meet was a NOS, still in the box, fleet side tail gate. With a price of $75 on it. I walked by and thought to myself if I didn't find anything else there I'd go back and pick it up in case I ever decide to paint my truck (there are still people on this planet who have a 67-72 truck and use it as a truck - but there aren't many of us left).

Well low and behold I didn't find anything so I went back only to find it gone. On the way out I saw it at another booth with the $75 masking tape gone and a piece of tape with $200 in its place.

This was back in the early 90s when EVERY swap meet had factory tach bezels for $75 with the factory harness included.

About 10 years ago, when GM discontinued the TGs with no warning, our local truck parts dealer marked his two in-stock TGs from $300 up to $600 and they were sold within two weeks.
...and they were worth it then, because the repros were blank and paper thin junk...but, the repros now are so much better, so the NOS should be worth less than before...now, if I can just get S-K to sell me his NOS for $150...

NOS vs REPRO

So what exactly is the difference? Some of the dealers actually claim on their web sites, that their TGs are the same thickness as original. Well, that's just not right.
It's been hard for me to determine, in the past, because all the original TGs around here usually had hardware in them, extra paint & trim...but, I just got an NOS one. Yes, I even have one.
I weighed both of them and the difference is: 7lbs. That's not a great amount, but it is substantial enough that you can feel it when you lift the two or tap the sides. Yes, you can tell the difference.
The new repros are excellent...but, they are NOT the same as the originals, are they?

pickmup, have any repops started making the gates with the visable spot welds that the origanals have. along the receased area near the handle from left to right and the ones on the outer edges from top to bottom thats how i tell the differance when looking at restored trucks. im not interested in buying repops being i have 2 new take off gates here in mint condition.
paid 575 for the first one at truck carlisle and later paid 250 for one at englishtown in the fall. of coarse i found the more expensive one first.

There were two very nice tailgates at the Monroe Swap meet...other than the two NOS gates. One was very well waxed, no rust, no dents $400. The other was a 3-day gate (taken off when the truck was 3 days old)...$450-$400. Prices are certainly up there.
