Hello & advice needed, leak on front drive shaft output
Hello, I haven't posted for a while. My name's Steve, I bought Nate's ( 71Blazer ) K5, and drove it down to L.A. Ca. from damn near the top of Wa. ,1200 Mi. in 2 days.
I've been doing some little upgrades, as problems arise. I installed a new CS144 140 amp alternator ( the stocker crapped out on me 10 mi. from home on my way down). a new jegs heavy duty Alum. water pump ( stocker started leaking in the middle of the desert, while I was at a MDR race) and some other little things I'll post pics of, like a new pass. fender ( fun to line up...not) and Auto meters in the factory cluster. what I need advice on is a leak that drips (runs) off the front drive shaft, I'm assuming its from the transfer case, which is a NP205. Is there a seal thats easy to replace there? where should I get one? Dealer? Thanks, Steve N Last edited by Steve N 69 69 69; 06-01-2005 at 12:40 AM. |

Is the truck an Auto? If so, it is most likely the transmission leaking. Is the fluid in the t-case low? You can buy rebuild kits for the 205 or just about any decent transmission shop will be able to rebuild it. Check with your local "real" autoparts store (not a discount store like schucks) or 4wd store for a 205 rebuild kit.

it is an automatic 350. I haven't checked the level in the 205, but the trans fluid is full.
Does the 205 use the standard fill it up till it starts to come out the filler hole technique. 80-90W right? I'll have to clean it up real good, and do a short run, to see if l can find where exactly its leaking l guess. |

Both are full? Hum, you should be able to tell if it is transmission fluid pretty quickly. You might want to drain both and refill them anyway.
How bad is the leak?

I haven't checked the 205 yet, but the tranny is within limits on the stick.
It only leaks after I have been driving a while. then it makes a spot about 6" around on the ground, that drips off the front drive shaft uni joint, but the front of the transfer case is all oilly. |

your leak might just be the front output shaft right behind the yoke, i fixed mine in about 15 min.. just remove the front driveshaft, yoke then pry out the seal, and reinstal new one.
i got my seal from a place called motion inc. about half the price of napa. and napa should carry it is you can`t find it any where else...

If the leak is tranny the spot will be red. If the leak is TC the spot is yellowish clear.

Awesome, thats what I wanted to hear. Ill test the color and get that seal when I get back. I'm off for Mexico, for the Baja 500, both our cars/drivers are broken, so we'll just be JAFO's , but it will be a blast.
Thanks for the help everyone, Steve N |

also, you can tell which fluid by the smell... gear oil smells to me like burnt onions almost makes you want to retch... tranny fluid has more of a sweet smell
