No, I'm not cutting the dash...

I have about 8 of the 12 original overhaul/service manuals for our pickups. Some are worn, some are very unused (like two I got from the Peterson library - yeah, the guys that make magazines). I will eventually have both the overhaul/service manuals for all 6 years.

Anyway, I'm going to completely unbind them so I can scan them into my computer with my scanner that has a 100 sheet automatic document feeder and auto duplexer. Would that be considered a sin?

Like slam33 said put them on a cd and share with your friends !!!!!

Might check out the copyright infringment laws ,,,,,,, don't want somebody on here gettin' in trouble ,,,,,, if that's not a problem i'd pay for one !!!!!!

If your scanner is that quick, I might be willing to lend you my 68 Salesman Data Book to Scan. There is a lot of goo infor in it that I would like to put up on the web, but don't have the time to scan with my little scanner

You're on '68. Is 38 ppm fast enough? I could have the whole book done in less than an hour! It will even do color for the paint chip section. I'm pretty sure that the data books are loose leaf in 3-ring binders, right? I'd give you a CD with that and all the rest I have scanned in too. I'll PM you.

I do plan on a CD. I already have all 6 of the "resto manuals" that are really just portions of the salesman's data book on cd, and the GMC Master Parts Book for 67-72 on CD, thanks to a board member that was nice enough to let me borrow them.

The GMC parts book took a LONG time, because it couldn't be unbound. Had to open to each page, position on scanner, push "scan", flip the book around, push "scan", flip page, repeat, etc... It was only 973 pages to scan. Oh, and every other page, I had to "flip" in the software because on the flatbed, I'd have to scan the page upside down because my hinge was in the way.

The guy was very patient while I scanned. Probably too patient.

The resto manuals went fast, because they are pretty much loose leaf anyway.

My original plan when I started scanning was to scan stuff that people weren't reproducing, and then just charge for the CD & shipping for whoever wanted one (probably just $2 or $3). I know that the service manuals and the assembly manual (which I haven't scanned yet) are being reproduced. I'm not sure if you can renew a copyright, but it's been 30 years since these were copyrighted. I thought that the copyright expired after 20 or 25 years. I might be able to distribute all of it. I'll have to check.

I think it would be a plus to our hobby if we could buy CD-ROM's that were year-specific for these trucks, and included the Owner's Manual, Chassis Service Manual, Overhaul Manual, Salesman's Books, Sales and Accessory brochures etc.

I feel that they could be reproduced (legally????) and offered for sale to a waiting public. These books, when reproduced, are good. Some of us prefer the "real thing" and look through countless flea markets/swap meets, etc., for the right book.

My guess is that legalities could get in the way, i.e., copyright laws. I wouldn't want anyone to get in trouble, either as a producer or a consumer. However, I am interested in anything I can get for 1969.

Thats a decent scanner if it can do that kinda workload. I'm intersted in CD's. Have a couple decent books too.

I would be interested in all of the 71 and 72 info on CD also. If all goes well with the leagal issues. I have a 71 chevy owners manual, a Sales brochure for the 71 and 72 suburbans. if you need any of those for you info sets. I will part with them to be scanned.

I've got an original 1969 GMC owners manual that I'd donate in exchange for a CD when you're finished. I found it at a wreckers and grabbed it but since I have a '68 chevy, I don't need it.

Books that can be taken apart will go fast. Those that have to be scanned a page at a time take a while!

The scanner is sweet! It's a $2400 scanner (it belongs to my employer, but I can come in early/go home late if I want to use it for personal).

I'm checking on the copyright laws. It initially looked like 28 years was the max on a copyright, but there's something about 1976 that changes everything, and then there's a renewal clause and then there was something about it not being copyrightable if it wasn't 'artistic' work...

I need to find a Intellectual Properties lawyer. Anyone a lawyer or know one? Maybe you work for a law firm and can ask a favor?

Are you changeing them to Adobe PDF format? If some where to reporoduce these manuals I think they would be in Adobe PDF format, just because most manuals and online catalogs are setup that way.

I plan on multi-page Tiff format. Multi-page Tiff viewers come standard with Win98 and up. I don't know about Macs. I guess I could have them in Acrobat if that's what people needed. Maybe both depending on how large the collection gets.

With 6 resto packs and 1 GMC Master parts book, I have about 110Mb worth of Tiff files. 590mb left on a CD... Not sure how a PDF file would compare to a Tiff file sizewise.

PDF would only be worth the effort if you did OCR on them. That would be a big PIA.

Since they are all images TIF would be great. Maybe then some energetic person could do OCR. (Searchable docs would be great!)
