non truck related but i bought an old 24in bmx cruiser afew weeks ago and the chrome is all chipped and surface rusted. so i was just going to remove the chrome and paint it olive drab..anyone know how to remove it other thern an acid bath? i'm at wyotech i don't think they'd appreiciate it at the dorms

Have it sand blasted would be the best way. An angle grinder with a flap disk will also work.

I don't think there's a chemical out there that will lift chrome plating but leave the metal alone. Anything you use will just damage the finish and leave it in tact. Furnace blasting might do it. Check around at some local machine shops that have a funace big enough...but you might as well have it media blasted at that point...

If you bring it to a chromer, the first thing they will do is chemically remove or strip down to the base material. This would be the expensive way of doing it. Just have it media blasted to save some $.

If you have it blasted, make sure the surfaces where the fork bearing cups and the crank bearing cups press in are covered up. Also you might want to plug the holes that lead to the insides of the frame tubes so you don't get a bunch of media rattling around inside the frame.
