bumper interchange ?s

I'm doing a reverse of the normal swap, 79 front clip on an 84, have the wiper motor/linkage/etc to swap into the newer cab, all the rest of the good stuff but I recall reading somewhere when I was first looking into this that the brackets for the 73-80 front bumper didnt fit correct on the ends of the newer frame (in this case 1984). Was this true and what was the solution to fix the interchange problem, anything that can be done without welding them on there or chopping anything up?

you may be able to space the bottom of the 79 bumper out to make it work. Not sure how close it would sit to the body, but it may work.

the frame on the 84 if i remember right has the rails a bit closer together to the mounts for the 79 will be wide. It may be easier to find a bumper for 81-87 or at least try to find the tech specs on the width and bolt spacing for each...
i havent done it but i would assume that a 81-87 bumper should fit on there without interference from the 79 front end since the grill should curve back about 1-2" above the top of the bumper... this is an assumption so dont quote me

81-87 bumpers are too narrow to fit a 73-80 front clip . It will touch the fenders on both sides . I will look at a couple frames I have tomorrow if no one has posted the measurements by then . The front frame horns are cut off at an angle making them shorter but I think that the width is the same on all 73-87 frames . My suggestion would be to get the front 6 inches or so off of a 73-79 frame and trim them to fit the front of your frame . Then just weld and grind and it will bolt on in the factory holes . Frank
