What is the deal with my fuel gauge? I turn the key to the on position and the pointer goes half a tank past full. Then I turned the truck on and the pointer went back to empty where it was (and always is). Whats with that?

Maybe the radiation from your glowing pumpkin whacked it out.
You may have a bad sending unit. I had a nissan that was fin until you got to half a tank, then it just fell to E. That's what the problem with my old nissan.

Check the wiring to the sending unit, and check the ground. A friend of mine gives the foloowing four step process for trouble shooting electrical problems:

1) Check the ground.
2) Check the ground.
3) Check all the other wires for unwanted ground.
4) Check the ground.

I found tis problem in the fuel cell in my 72' when I bought the truck. It turned out to be a bad sending unit. So after I replaced the unit, the gauge was stil jumpy when the fuel would slosh around in the tank. The easy fix to a jumpy needle was a good ground. Hope this helps.

Hmm...2/3 say the problem lies with the ground...Nah I'm thinkin the radiation from my glowing pumpkin is makin it jumpy!

I assume we're talking about the tank behind the seat.

It doesn't have a ground wire (at least mine doesn't), it grounds through the tank itself, probably through the bolts that hold the tank to the cab. I'm not exactly sure how you'd go about grounding it any better..

Don't forget the brass float in the tank. Mine was leaking and did weird stuff depending on the gas tank level and temperature. Turned out it had a little gas in it. You can buy the float or entire sending unit from any of the 67-72 parts vendors.

You ground it better by pulling the bolts out, cleaning the rust out of the threads and from around the holes, and putting the clean bolts back in.

Of course, the ground could also be iffy around the sending unit.

Then again, as I said before, it could be the sending wire, too.

Paid $1200; sold for $1500 a few years later. Just a hint at the appreciation that was coming. Retired as a factory automation products salesman. Worked part-time over the years for an engine builder and a classic car repair shop. Member here for 24 years! This is the very first car/truck Internet forum I joined.
