If you get the underbed harness with the stepside you should be okay. The tail lights on the steppers have two plugs each on the outside of the bed that are different from the fleet sides.

The stepsides use the same gas tanks as the fleet sides, but the 79-87 step beds use a unique plastic adapter to mount the filler neck to the fender that is nearly impossible to find. Make sure you get the filler with the step bed.

You will prolly want to find a stepside rear bumper, they are narrower than the fleetsides. You use the fleetisde bumper but it will hang way out past the bed.

When looking at step beds pay close attention for rot in the area where the fender attaches to the bed. Because of the way the bed rail overhangs the fender it is easy to miss rot in the fender attaching area with a casual glance. This is real important on a bed with a driver side filler door. Those fenders are real tough to find in steel.

Why do you want to change beds anyway? I take it you like the step side better. I like both but do perfer the fleetside. Then you will have to repaint your truck to match both the bed and cab. In my experence, paint the whole truck. If you just paint the bed most likely you can tell the difference. I sure could on one I had done years ago. LOL
