Stock temp guage wiring - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have recently gotten my 307 running again. Now I am starting to trouble shoot a long list. My temp guage is not working. I think it is disconnected at the temp sensor. I have traced the wires from the guage to what I think is the the connector that attaches to the sensor. The wires are hanging free on the driver' side of the engine, but I can't locate the sensor.

Quit laughing.

Where does the sensor bolt in? To the block? To the intake? Somewhere else? Should it be accessible with the engine in the truck?

And one last question, can you tell I am new to these trucks?

The sending unit goes in the drivers side head, and the wire for it should be green.

I'll go out there and give the driver's side head close look.

If the engine has later model head on it, the port on the side of the head will be too small for the sensor. If this is the case, you will have to get yourself a sensor and mount it somewhere else. I purchased a thermostat water neck off of an early 80s car that had the correct size hole in it for the temperature sensor.

The temperature sensor wire should be green and might have remnants of some funky cloth/fiberglass tubing around it.
