Questions for the pros

I re-titled this post for more input, the newbie title didn't draw much attention.



I have been watching this board for over five years, and have had one or more 68-72 tagged titled and insured since 1981 (never owned a 67). I am currently building a truck and would like to ask some questions, some may not seem relevent but I have over twenty years of parts and need to structure a plan before resto begins. I want to make sure the two trucks I have are original.

What are or, are their more than ten differences between a BB 1/2 ton and SB 1/2 ton?
Why is a 1971 cab unique and what are the differences between a 1970 and 1971 cab?
Are their any differences between a 1971 and 1972 cab?
Are their any cosmetic differences between a 1971 and 1972 grill?
Are their any differences between a 1969 and 1970 grill?
Are their differences between a 1967 and 1968 frame?
Are their differences between a 1968 and 1969 frame?
What is the percentage of 1967 BW custom cabs?
How many different styles of ashtrays are their?
Would a 1972 4x4 have an engine badge on the fender?
When was factory tilt first offered and are the hazard switches different?
Do truck and van tilts have the same amount of positions?
When was the column flat plug adapter standard?
Was their some type of power steering offered in 1967?
Is the windshield stainless the same from 1967-1972?
Is their a diffference in fuel lines from 1967-1972?
Are all BB alternater brackets the same from 1968-1972?
Are CST and Cheyenne seats the same as a C/10?
Do all 1967-1972 have the tag above the key switch?
What year was the wood floor an option in fleetsides and not standard?
Is their a difference between the high beam indicator between 1967-1972?
When was the 327 or 283 replced by the 307 or did they overlap?
Was the manual over-drive only available on the 1/2 ton?
Are their any other parts off a 70's van that are interchangable with 1967-1972?
Is the interior light the same as a 70's international pickup?
Are mid-seventies Dodge truck bucket seats the same as 1969-1972 seats?
When was the 402 available for 1967-1972 and will the pitons have .030 stamped on them?
What trucks were available with the high hump?
What type of seat did the 1967-1968 Custom Camper walk-through cab use,
did the dealer get it with the provisions for a bench and use another type seat?
Is the 1967 vent window handle the same as the 1966?

Here is a photo of what makes a 71 cab different it is the place where the rear view mirror mounts on all of the other cabs it is smooth.

71 & 72 cabs also had a vent on the driver side rear door pillar

71 & 72 grills are the same

69 & 70 grills are the same it is the inner grill that is different

67 frame don't have a dimple for the steering box

they all have the tag above the key switch

fuel lines the 71 & 72 had vent lines the other did not

Welcome from Ohio.

Boy thats a lot of questions. I can probably help on some of those.

I don't believe that 67 had power steering.
There are two types of stainless trim for the windshield, a shallow and deep flange insert.
I know some people use the side markers off the van. I have seen pictures of the late 80's early 90's flush mount van side markers used on 68-72 trucks.
Walk through cab used the buckets like you would find in a burb but no console.
I do believe the 66 and 67 vent handles are the same.

The bucket seat info is very impressive, thanks so far guys. Do the outer 71 and 72 grills have a different paint scheme?

The columns all had horse shoe harness plugs through 67 - 72, the adapter was installed later, mostly in the bigger trucks that used the old style colums. Flat plugs in 10 - 30 series started in 73.
There was a power steering option in 67, it was the external ram style, like the older corvettes, VERY prone to leaking.
Cab chassis trucks (67 - 72) that had the camper build up on the back had a fuel tank underneath, and all cowl/chassis trucks were so equipped too. (68 was the last year for cowl/chassis)
Wood floors were never standard in 67 - 72 GM trucks fleet sides with the exception of the Longhorn, which, like the step sides, was the only way you could get it. So SWB and LWB fleet sides all came standard with steel.
bb verses SB 1/2 ton trucks....
high hump was required with all big blocks EXCEPT the hand full that had 3 speeds.
a heat shield on the passenger floor board for the exhaust.
big block specific gearing (I think..I KNOW that to be true on 20 and 30 series trucks)
HD coils
remote resivor power steering if so optioned
That's about all i can think of.
in '70 the 396 was canned, and the 402 was used in place of it. No clue on the 30 over stamping, but I highly doubt it.
70 verses 71 cab;
door jamb vent on 71, not on 72
throttle rod on 70, cable on 71 (and the hole was not the same..one or the other)
As mentioned, 71 was a single year run for the raidsed mounting pad for the mirror
71 had more fuel lines, allong with the mounting provisions.
High hump verses low hump...
All 4X4 had high hump
all 4 speeds had high hump
all big blocks NOT equipped with a 3 speed manual had high humps
On the GMC side, the 1/2 tons with the V-6 and automatic TH400 had high humps.
There's a few variations...some swear that there big block automatic had a low hump originally...but GM says this is how it is....I'm sure some left the assembly line done wrong though.
67 verses 68 frames...
68 had provisions for the big block, which I think included slightly wider space petween the frame rails, and the flaired spot for fuel pump clearance ont he passenger forward section. Been reports of 67's ith said provisions though.
67 had no dimple for power steering gear box. (the ram set up used a non power steering gear box)
some early 68's had no provisions either.
Tilt started in 69 by the books, but there was a 68 shown on here recently with it and listed in the glove box....go figure.
The hazzard switch being chainged to the black press button instead of the red pull button was sometime in the 73 - 87 run...I'm thinking it was 75-ish. All replacements are this way (safety feature) and should include the aformentioned adapter for flat to horse shoe plug.
2 style ash trays, nylon bushing sliders, and ball bearings.
I THINK the nylon was a 67 thing.
71 cab verses 72 cab differances... the aformentioned mirror mounting pad is the only thing I know of that chainged.
the 283 was replaced with the 307 in 68.
The 327 was replaced with the 350 in 69
High beam indicator differences...
most were a round hole, some were rectangular...I did a pole on this a few years ago, and I can't remember the outcome. I want to say 67 - 71 had round, and 72 had rectangular.
That's all I can answer of the top of my head.

Wow alot of good ???'s Tommy. I think the 71-72 grills did have a different paint scheme, the black around the headlights on the surround grill. There are 3 different ash trays, 67 only was straight on nylon, then the ballbearings, then the curved nylon slider, outer part is a bit bigger on 67's too.

the high beam indacators 67-70 were square and 71-72 were round on the trucks i have.

Both '68s I've owned have not had the ignition key label, neither had an ACC position either.
The Internationals that I've dealt with had the same looking dome light... Gotta love the cornbinders use of everyone else's stuff.

I have a LWB box from a 71 I parted that was wood floor [Camper Special] so it must have been an option, but as Longhorn man stated above the stanard was steel floors.

The Fuel tank line on my 67 is just a single, when did they go to a dual line? Again, the '71 that I parted out had a dual line from cab tank and a 3 position switch for saddle tanks.

Also the 67's (and I think 68's) Had the two position key, OFF/ON/START, Later models have ACC/OFF/ON/START, The 3 position units also have a bigger dash hole & ignition bezel than the 2 position units.

Yes. This is subject of much debate and somebody will pop on here and call me wrong, but both the inner grill and the outer grill are different. The inner grille on a '70 has what looks like vertical bars, even though it is just vertical recesses. The outer shell (aluminum) differences are near the marker lights. On 69s, the horizontal bars above and below the "Chevrolet" only extend to the marker lights. On 70s, they extend past the marker lights. There's always someone who shows an exception, but if they looked closer they would see that one of three things has happened. First, it was a '69 toward the end of the production run, second, it was a 70 close the the first of the production run, or the grill has been changed.

It wasn't standard in any. E81 was the option code for a fleetside wood bed. Contrary "restoration" practices, the wood floor was PAINTED black in '67, body color 68 +. None were finished like the show trucks of today.
