Question about "Rally" Wheels

Please excuse my ignorance, but could someone please explain to me just what exactly a "rally" wheel (as it came from the factory) is? Someone offered to sell me a set (I haven't seen them), but said they needed to be repainted. Were the true Rally wheels chrome, painted, what? Were they just a straight steel rim with a bunch of chrome trim pieces? Did they come in different sizes (widths)? If they were painted, were they painted a specific color? I would appreciate someone bringing me up to speed on exactly what a Rally wheel is. If someone could provide a close up picture of a Rally, that would be great. Thanks much.

Rally wheels are painted steel wheels with a chrome or stainless steel trim ring and a chrome center cap and lug nuts. They are available in several widths. I think trucks came with 7" and 8" wheels. I have heard that vans came with 6" or 6.5" rally wheels. The most popular wheel seems to be the 8" that I have on my truck.

EDIT: The color is called "Argent Silver." Later model trucks had a plain steel wheel (without the slots mine have around the edge of the center of the wheel) with cap and trim. I hear them called rally wheels also, but they are not as nice looking, in my opinion.

Would you think that $125.00 would be too much for a set (4)? They come with certer caps, but no trim ring. Also, he said they needed repainting.

I have never bought any, so I could not really say. See if anyone on the board has any in the sale section to get an idea of the correct price. Around here, the trim rings are cheap, and readily available. That may not be the case where you are.

Also, ask the width if that is important to you. I would not pay as much for a smaller wheel as I would for a set of 8 inchers.

EDIT: They all need repainting unless someone has redone it recently. Mine need it.

I think I paid $125.00 for a set of 4 8" ralleys, but they had caps & trim rings. It's not a bad price if they are 8", but I would try to get the price down a little more since they don't have trim rings. I had to paint mine, and that added $17 per rim to have them bead blasted.

One question I forgot to ask. Slonaker you said they were painted steel wheels. How can I tell that I'm looking at a set of Rally's instead of a regular steel wheel if go look at them? Do they have a specific look, cutouts, etc.?

I think they come in 15x6.5 (Van Rallys) 15x7 (Regular truck Rallys) and 15x8 (Suburban Rallys and some trucks).

I have a set of 15x8's on my truck with 31x10.50 tires.

Do you have an email address that I can send you a picture of them?

The truck rallys have a series of rectangles cut out around the perimeter of the wheel. The later, plain ones look like a plain old steel wheel. You can barely see the cutouts in this pic:

The rims will be marked with the width & the year of manufacture. Let me check tomorrow when I get to my folk's place where the info is on the rims. I have a set of 7" & 8" rims that I am painting. This is a lot easier than trying to decifer the codes or remembering to take a tape measure along.

Its on the back of the rim on the inside lip. Problem is tho its always very dirty and cant see the marking very well. The 15x8s are harder to get if someone knows what they have. There aren't that many of them, yeah there are a lot left but 10 fold in the 15x7 rally's. The best way is if they dont have tires on the rims and measuring inside lip to inside lip. After awhile its something you get a feel for if they are the wider 15x8s or not.

I painted mine with Eastwood Argent Silver Wheel Paint and then with a wheel clear. I have not mounted mine on truck at this time, still need to buy tires. I will be putting 55/70R/15 on mine. I got my beauty rings off of e-Bay. (better price) I paid $100.00 for wheels alone from a salvage yard and had to fine centers etc. So in my openion, $125.00 is good if they are 8".

I paid $20 each for 8" wides at the yard. No caps or paint. I used Duplicolor silver with clearcoat, then put on the new center caps that are held on by the plastic lug nut caps.

They charge that much here for the 7" Ralley's. The 8" go for $100.00 - $125.00 depends on condition of the wheels. Even higher with caps and beauti rings.
