Question 64 6lug 12bolt rearend help!!!

i've got a fresh from the farm 64 lwb fleet that i've just started on in the last couple of months, and i'm converting it to 5lug. i got my parts from a 78 1/2 ton. the front end went fine, except for tie rod ends. that part got resolved though. the rear end which i thought would be easy, has turned out bad as usual. i pulled the stock axels out and they were different splines. i don't know anything really about diffs but i do know one thing, the spline on these axels are so thick, it must be one tuff rear. i asked a bunch of different people, and know one has heard of this. anyone have any comments they could make about my problem, and any much needed help.

I did the same thing the day before yesterday. Someone gave me a 65 rear, I had, what I was told was 72 model 5 lug axles, and tried the same swap myself. You will more than likely have to find a 67-72 Chevy rear to use your 5 lug axles in. I have my 6 lug housing but am having a hard time finding the axles. Later, Mark

somebody told me that i have to get only the 71 or 72 because they are the only ones with 5 lug, and the only one's that are the same length across, and also because they go with the coil springs. this is if i change the whole rear end i mean. for the axels themselves, i think the only thing i could do is get the original 6 lug axels redrilled at a machine shop. were your axels the really thick splined axels too fuelcellguy?????

63 & 64 had the coarse splines, 71-72 are wider by 3/4 inch each side. Redrilling your axles is prob easiest. Brian

Yea, what he said. I guess the rear I had was from a 63/64, it had the 17 spline axles. Later, Mark

Thumbs up thanks

thanks guys for the input. this was my first conversation on this site, i just joined the other day. its nice to see so many people in the same place that share my DISEASE. the last thing i want to know is if that 17 spline axel was a special option from the factory, and if it is a good rearend too have.

There is nothing special about your coarse spline axles, they were avalible in 63 and 64, in 65 the went to fine spline, you can either get 71-71 axles and build spacers between you axle tubes and backing plates, or you can have you axles redrilled , but youll also have to have the centre hub turned down so you can slide 71-72 drums on.

Where in alberta are you?

I also am building a Slammed 64, used to be a 66 hence the name.

Yeah, you can't spacer the 63-4 rear due to pressed on backing plates, no bolts. Brian

sweet car, i'd love to have that. i know there are going to be people mad at me for this, but that would be my first choice for something to rebuild. i love camaro's, i have an 86 iroc Z28. but chevy is chevy what ever way you look at it. those things are expensive to rebuild anyway. you have to find a very nice one, which it looks like you have. where did you find it, if you don't mind me asking.... gotta run, anyone else interested in the wheels.... they have to go back within the next couple of days for sure, so if someone is interested, let me know. gord
