Planning tranny swap....
I will be dropping in a 406 in my truck in the near future. My current tranny is the original powerglide that is tired and simply boring. My problem is I can't decide between a th350 or the th400. The engine puts out upwards of 470hp and 520 ft.lbs so I want something that can handle what i put to it. Does anyone run this kind of power and if you do, what is your setup???

IMO, there is only 1 auto trans to run in the hypo app.....that would be the bad @ss 400 turbo hydro! it will take 18-20 more ponies @ the rear wheels to run, buit a good stock rebuild, + shift kit & converter to match your cam...should handle all the power/tork you are looking to give it L

Are you for sure going with an automatic? I have a granny 4 speed in mine and would like to upgrade to a T-56 (6 speed) later on, its a bit of work to get one in but ... just a thought, Doug

The last thing I want is to blow up a tranny, would a th350 need a fair amount of cash dumped into it to handle the power?? Also, what are your opinions on 700r4's? Is the lock-up converter an issue? Is it as strong as the th400? How many RWHP does it require to run???? Fill me in!!

400's are stronger, a good 350 turbo handled my 455 Stage 1 Buick built with cam, highrise and roller rockers thru 2 years of drag racing and street driving with 0 problems!

A good Turbo 350 is stronger then most 700R4's and a Turbo 400 is about the best heavy duty auto you can get. It does not have an overdrive but that is about it's only shortcoming.

you should go for a performance rebuild weather you decide on a 3speed or a 4speed overdive is just a matter of budget and how you intend to use the truck. a good place for bullitproof performance trannies is www.fbperformance.com

I would take a good look at a 700R4 like a B&M. If you plan to cruise at all the overdrive has better economy, will place less wear and tear, and does not suck down 20 ponies and weigh more like a 400 turbo. A good 350 heavy duty built should be considered. I run a GV overdrive ( uses 1 hp) behind my 350 turbo --however, I run a small block.

4l80e is an overdrive 400 basicly. They are a little hard to come by though. I would go with a good 400 and then take a look at Gear Venders over drive unit.
