Foolish MPG question
Yes, I know its going to be low, but out of curiousity (or to confirm what I think I already know) are there any opinions on what the mileage of an 85 crew cab, running 4.10's, an SM465, and a 454 with 396 vette heads would be? Its running on 36" tires and its a 4x4 srw pickup.
Yes, I am aware of the thread asking how to get 20+mpg out of a 454.....that is not what I am asking, just trying to get a general idea of what the mpg city/highway would be. Thanks |

I have an '86 CrewCab Dually with a 454, 4:10 gears. 32" tall tires.
It is 2WD. A properly built TH400 with an Allison torque converter. Built for towing. Very similar to yours. I get approximately 10 -11 mpg unloaded Approximately 7-8 mpg loded and towing a 15,000, 40 foot Chapparal race car trailer. The engine has more than 200K miles. I am building another engine that should get more than 10 mpg towing.  A large truck, especially with 4WD cannot expect to get 20 plus mpg.  Just my .02  CCDually

I was well aware of the impossibility of getting 20mpg with a truck of this size, let alone a 4x4 with a 454.....just curious to see what others are getting with a similarly equipped vehicle. 11-12 on the highway is actually better than I would have guessed.

I was getting about 8 mpg with mine before it blew on me last year, 454/400, '77 2wd with 4.11 gears and P275/60R15 on the rear, P245/60R15 tires on the front.

91 R2500 burb with 454 tonawanda TBI i get about 9gpm.. er mpg

 I have a friend who use to have about what you have and he only got between 6 to 8 mpg. He sold it.
