3 Speed Tranny for 62 Chevy 3/4 ton
Does anyone know what all years of trucks I could get a tranny out of to fit a 1962 Chevy 3/4 ton? Even a 1957 Chevy car tranny I tried once fit, but the lower bolt holes weren't threaded. It would be nice to know what all years of trucks have the same tranny before I go to the junk yard. Thanks, Tom

What engine are you currently running in your '62?
I'm running a '70-'72 GM 3 speed manual trans behind the 235 in my '62. All 2 top bolts are threaded into the bellhousing, and the 2 bottom ones have nuts & lock washers. David

Chevy 3 speed tranny
The 62 has a 283 cid. Would the tranny's be the same for the 6 cyl as the V-8? Is the later tranny you put in a direct swap, with no alterations to the drive shaft, etc? Thanks. Tom

Tranny bolts
Forgot to mention, that on my current set up, for the upper tranny bolts, the holes are threaded in the bell housing, and the lower holes are threaded in the tranny flange...... no nuts used.

Hi Tom,
It was a bolt in, the newer trans was in the truck when I had acquired it 4 years back. A few years back I had installed a new clutch, and the 3 speed trans slide right back in. The trans should be the same, since any engine & trans combo's could have been ordered from the factory. Even a 4 speed muncie, or saginaw 4 speed(car) out of a chevette should also work too. The SM420 (4 speed) that was attached to the V8 '60-'62 bellhousing had the 2 lower bolts go from the inside of the bellhousing into the trans, and the top 2 were screwed right into the top of the bellhousing. This was attached to the V8 I had picked up from another board member. If your truck came originally with a 3 speed, the slip in yoke should go in, but on the SM420-SM460 (4 speed) has 2 "U" shaped with a "U" joint that bolts directly to the back of the 4 speed. If your truck has this setup, a new driveline will be needed. I also forgot to mention, the 4 bolt holes on the 3 speed are perfectlt uniformed (top & bottom row), I forgot what the 4 speed(SM420) trans bolt pattern was.

Tom, it's very common to use the car 3 speeds in the trucks, you just have to use longer bolts with nuts and lock washers in the bottom holes and it works fine. The later model syncronized 3 speeds from 68 up have fine spline output shafts, and I think they may be a little longer too. Some transmissions also have different sized input bearing retainers so the hole in the bell housing has to match. I have a couple of the old 3 speeds, where are you located?

Chevy Trannys
Thanks for your replies. You've given me several options in finding a tranny that will fit, so I shouldn't have much problem finding something here in MN.
