5 speed trans swap

Right now I've got an 85 small block with a SM465, 2wd. I have an opportunity to score an 89 Cheyenne with a V6 and want to swap the 5 speed, driveshaft and rearend in to my truck. Will the 5 speed bolt up to my small block. I crawled underneath the CHeyenne and the bellhousing looks completely differnt???

Hmm, I think that the bellhousings should be the same. I was pretty sure that most chevy engines had the same bellhousing.

The 5 speed transmission on the '89 chevy looks different than the setup I have on my '85 with the SM465. I am pretty familiar with my bellhousing since I swapped in the 465 a few years ago. It has a bellhousing that bolts to the back of the motor and it holds the hydraulic clutch. the 465 bolts to the back of the bellhousing with 4 large bolts.

The 5 speed on the '89 looks like the bellhousing is part of the transmission. It also has a hydraulic clutch but it isn't in the same spot as the 465 setup. I am going to get the whole truck so I will be able to grab whatever I need. I just wanted to know if the 5 speed will bolt to the back of my '85 small block. thanks.

the bellhousing on those trannys is part of the case. If it is bolted to the 4.3 it should bolt to your engine. The pads on the rearend may have to be moved along with the shock mounts.

Should be the same as far as the spring pads, The newer truck uses a different shock but I cant remember if it was the bottem eyelet or the top that differed. Either way 5 minute fix. Axles are longer since the newer truck will use a different offset rim then our trucks use. So if you use your 73-87 rims the back tires will stick out like an inch more.
