Hey fellas,

I've been lurking for a while learning as much as I can.

I've been wanting to get one of these for quite a while (years) and have a couple questions I can't seem to find the answers to on the board. I've got some classic muscle experience with a 69 camaro, and a 72 nova.

How difficult is it to swap a v8 into an inline 6 truck? (I'm going to look at a shortbed stepside tomorrow or sat with an inline six.)
How long is a longbed 3/4 ton truck? As in front to rear bumper. (wondering if it will fit in my small garage)
Are there any major differences between the 68-72's that should make me seek out one over the other?
Are the leaf spring trucks better or worse than the coil spring trucks? And what comes on what? As in a 3/4 ton will always have coil springs etc..
How rare are the factory ac trucks? I've already seen 3 and was under the impression they were few and far between.

Luckily I'm in california, and there seem to be quite a few trucks to pick from. I've looked at 9 as of tonight this past week, and going to look at another tomorrow. It's difficult for me to put a value on things and judge a good price for these since I've pretty much found every combination possible just haven't been able put a value on them from what I know.

From the NW. The V-8 swap is easy, as long as you stay with the same tranny. Motor mounts, exhaust, some carb linkage, a gas line and maybe a fan shroud? When you talk about changing shifter & pedals and it can be a bit of a hassle but not by no means impossible. Leaf vs. Coil.... that depends on what you want the finished product to be, street crusier, work truck, slammed show truck maybe? The 71 & 72 trucks already have disk brakes but it really is up to you as far as what you like. There are 3 differnt front ends to choose from for Chevy's and a couple more in the GMC line, but you can always interchange to suit your style. General rule of thumb is the more factory gagets, the more vaulable the truck. AC is just one to add to a very big list. Tachs, tilt columns, shoulder belts, cruise controls, speedwarnings, CST, Custom Cab, Cheyenne packages and Longhorn are many of the crowd favorites. Take a look into the VIN numbers for trucks, copy it down and take it with you before you buy anything check it out! Question the seller about whatever does not match the VIN numbers.

Always check the door post VIN and the one on the glove box to see if they match the rest of the truck and the title. An old army buddy of mine bought a 68 K20, and later found out the cab was from a 2wd truck. If you have a digi camera take a few pics, post them here and ask for advice. There are many experts among us who can spot the difference between fly poop & pepper. Good Luck

BTW, yesterday I saw what has been called the most rare truck out there. a '69 C20, NO rust whatsoever, & completely un-molested. its at a restoration shop on consignment. I'll have to check the asking price

1971 started on the disc brake option, became standard on the 72's.

GMC's are leaf spring, Chevy's are coil unless it was ordered with leafs from the factory,(there are some out there). Also, 4x4's are all leaf spring. Welcome from

JIMs70GMC user # 2756 Join Date: Jun 2001 Location: Chesapeake, Virginia Posts: 4,612	My 70 GMC longbed is right at 18' long. __________________ 1970 K25, 8' stepside bed 350/465/205 44 up front, 60 in the rear 4.10s rolling on 33" Dunlop MTs 1986 K5, 350/465/208 Dana 60/14 bolt from a cucv 36" Super Swampers TSL/SX 1983 K20 w/ CUCV axles, 350/700R4/208 sitting on 37" Goodyears 1986 M1031 6.2 diesel, TH400/NP205 locker in the rear and a LS in the front, all stock for now..... 1986 K30, 350/400/205 dana 60 and 14 bolt. I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm
