dash pad recovering
What do you guys think of using fiberglass to recover the dash? Do you think it will withstand the hot temps inside the inclosed cab on hot summer days without cracking?

I've considered doing this too. The only thing that I am worried about not working is getting that same texture back later...

Well I've seen some guys doing it on tv covering speaker enclosures etc. and after they applied the liquid to the cloth it looked really smooth. I suppose a little practice on various pieces wouldn't hurt.

If mixed and laid properly, I don't see any problems with the fiberglass cracking or deterioring. It would be probably outlast the factory pad and would look really smooth and cool. But, it would take some work to get a real good finish product.

well it takes a lot of work to make one smooth i talked to a guy who has his dash and door panals done and he said he had 8 layers of glass on the dash alone its a time consuming job but im goin to start doin glass dashs and might sell them

Why? The plastic slip on dash covers sold for $100 look perfectly stock. Of course thats asuming the dash isnt pulled up 3in in the air.

Slip on dash covers for our trucks? Did not know they made them for these trucks. Do they look good? I do not need one but nice to know. Where could someone find these? thanks

It such a common problem, and always right in front of us when we're driving our trucks, I came up with my own solution. Haven't seen anyone else do it.
I didnt want to get one of the what I consider an expensive cover or send it out to a professional. I have a friend who has an upholstery shop and says that a good upholsterer can recover anything. I've seen him do everything from boat covers and tops, convertable tops and complete interiors. I drought in my dash one day (and a 6 pack) and it took him about 20 minutes to whip out this cover. It has stood up to over ten years of brutal New Mexico sun and all it takes is a whipe of a damp cloth to clean up. Regular upholstery vynal seems to last forever if not subjected to fat arses. This is of my C20 and I have another, but in gray, in my 76 K20. |

I've had a slip on(it's really a glue on) dash cover for 5 years it still looks good. I got mine form american classictrucks.com for 89.00. Looks factory and it beat paying 300.00 for a new dash pad that I would have to stain to match.

Hey bodydropped that would be a cool thing to offer to the public, but it would be exspensive. I bought a 83 gmc with a wore out (buckling and coming unglued) slip on dash pad and I've been kinda scared of them ever since. A co worker of mine installed one in his truck and it did look good to the untrained eye. My current dash is split above the speakers so I don't think recovering that pad would last very long. I've also thought about using some sort of fabric/material to cover it also.

my dash in my truck was wrapped in vinyl from a upholesrty shop intown u can feel the cracks under it but its looks cleaner becasue it doesnt have the holes for the speakers since my truck didnt have them

So how well do these covers really look? I dont care if they don't look factory I just don't want it to look like a cover. Can you see a seam around the passanger side trim piece where the a/c vents are (or would be). Does the cover extend behind the gauge bezel so there is no seam there? Are there any other places where the old dash can be seen or where things don't fit right?

anyone have any pictures of a fiberglass dash.. I am really thinking of giving it a try.. my dash is need of some work anyways.. so if i mess up i will just have to get a new one i guess. I would like to see some pictures though first.. I am not too sure about the shine it would have.. would it be too much?
