Door Panels - Paint or dye???
I've been planning for a while to switch the interior of my Burb from tan to black, and I finally have some time to do it. I got a good deal on some black leather seats from a totaled 2001 blazer, and pretty much everything else I need (except black seat belts of course, it seems like you pretty much have to give up your first born to get a set of those). Otherwise, the interior is now totally gutted and I'm ready to go. But my question is, should the door panels be painted with normal rattle can paint or dyed with some premixed SEM spray? I'm not sure of the panels' composition. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Shawn

i've painted them before, i would scuff it, then spray it with some adhesive promoter, primer, than paint.
i haven't tried the dye on a door panel yet. i bet it would work great though. i'm about to color my ugly red door panels so i would like to see what others have tried too.

There are some black seat belts on e-bay right now. I think they are up to $128.00 with a few days left. Also, I have painted mine many times (not same ones) with vynel paint with good luck. Just make sure you clean real good and do not paint on a wet day. It never came out as good on wet days for me. I also used a hair dryer for some spots that I had trouble with. Just put on very thin coats-kinda fog like at first and spray again while still tacky.
On the seat belts, the # is 7985605631. This is a really nice set. lol

i used SEM's vinyl dye... and i would recommend it very much... the only downside is, is that it's $9 or so a can, but the finish is amazing... plus, if you flex the panels a lil bit, the dye will flex and not chip off...

Dye them! If you don't have a paint gun use SEMS brand spray dye. Make sure you use the adhesion promoter as well. Before you do any of that strip them with laquer thinner and remove any old dye that is on them. If they have never been dyed before, clean them anyway. Use laquer thinner, then soap and water, and make sure they are comepletely dry. Spray the adhesion promoter per the instructions then dye them. If done properly it will last forever...
This is one I found at a swap meet. In the pic it looks pretty good and even matches my interior. Notice there is a little blue peaking out in places...

After about an hour with a gallon of laquer thinner I had all the old dye stripped off...

Although mine were sprayed by the guys at Stoked Out Specialties, you can get quality results with SEMS spray cans.
Here is the finished product... Last edited by N2TRUX; 07-13-2005 at 10:40 PM. |

Looks like a black truck. Would like to see pictures of the exterior also. I just love black trucks. The interior looks great by the way.

I've yet to figure out why it's called dyeing, your really just painting it no matter what type you use

Thanks for all the input guys, after seeing how awesome N2TRUX's came out, I'll definitely be using the premixed SEM spray. Completely converting the interior on this monster is a pretty big undertaking for a novice like me, so I'm gonna be posting a lot of progress pics.
As far as why it's called dyeing as opposed to painting - It seems to me that painting merely creates a layer of colored foriegn material on the surface of an object, whereas dyeing actually penetrates the object to the extent of its porousness and changes its color on a molecular level. That's my take anyway. Thanks again everyone, Shawn
