Some suspension basics for a n00b

Can someone explain to me the basic 2wd and 4wd suspension setups for the 67-72 trucks or point me to a thread that has this info?

Example:

1971 K10 have solid front and rear axles and leaf springs(not coils) f&r correct?

Do all the 67-72 C/Ks have rear leaf springs?

You are correct on the 4wd's, I'm pretty sure they're the same from 67-72.

2wd trucks have coils up front and could have either leaf rear or trailing arm and coil rears.

Welcome to the board, what part of the Magnolia state are you in?

Hey Krue I am in south MS too, I am in Ocean Springs. You?

Krue do you have any idea which ones have the trailing arm rears and coils? Those are the ones that are throwing me.

My 67 LWB Step, C10 6cyl basic truck has rear coil springs, on the option plate it's listed as "Heavy Duty Coil Springs" if this helps any.

I am wondering if thats an earlier run setup on the 67-72s. I was looking at the pics of Copperhead(seriously modified I know) from TRUCKS! and was suprised to see rear coils. In the description he just says drop springs, not leaf to coil conversion. I couldnt see if there were trailing arms in the pic because of the angle, must be though.

Mine has the typical trailing arm setup. I'd take a pic and let you know the production date but the truck is at the shop having the motor rebuilt, as I'm not quite that mechanically inclined to do a total rebuild.

Me either, and there's a serious tool handicap to do it right too. If you get a chance to snap a pic that would be great.

My understanding
2WD:
Front: all Chevy and GMC came with coils.
Rear: Chevy came with coils with the option of leafs; GMC came with leafs with the option of coils.
4WD: I don't know though I would like to.

Welcome to the best message board on the internet.

Where is Ocean Springs in MS?

There's no telling what the rear suspension is gonna be w/o looking but generally chevy's have coils, GMC's have leaves. My GMC however has coils. There's a couple of members in Gulfport, check out this thread.

Thats crazy, but I guess thats why there's some confusion. I saw a K20 4x4 on Ebay and it had leaf springs f&r, I think its a GMC though. I guess I will need to start paying attention to make. I woulda thought the platforms would have been basically identical for 10 and 20 regardless of Chevy/GMC.

Ocean Springs is as south MS as you can go without swimming. Its right on the Gulf Coast, next to Biloxi and a bit down the road from Gulfport.

The C20 I am looking at has the following build sheet:

With Base 127 [127” wheelbase]
Model CE20934 [2wd – gas V8 – 3/4ton – fleetside – 8ft bed]
F51 Ft and RR Shock Absorb [HD shocks front and rear]
G50 Heavy Rear Spring [HD rear springs 2000#]
LS9 350 V8 [350 cu in V8]
N40 power Steer [power steering]
Z84 Custom Sport Truck [Cheyenne, High Sierra]
621 Saddle Vin Custom Trim [Interior color/trim]
B85 Belt Molding [Exterior belt molding]
F59 Front Stabilizer [2” square solid front stabilizer bar]
G60 Aux Spring [Aux rear springs 5000#]
M49 Turbo Hydromatic [TH350]
V63 AM Push Button Radio [AM radio]
F or E36 White-Ochre [Exterior colors]

The stuff in the brackets was my rookie attempts at deciphering from info here mostly.

Awesome to hear there are some members close by. Install days .
