Rear end gears cost?
Hello,
I would like to change gears in my 72 2wd long box, 350 auto. Runs great, headers and has a 12 bolt with leaf springs. It currently has 2:70's and is ok, but I would like to go to a 3:73 and posi. for more snap. Approx. what can I expect to spend for gears, posi set up and poss. labor if a shop does it. Also, is it worth the expense to get the posi. Thanks Rivernut |

2.70? Mind if I ask what that came out of? Can't help ya on the price, but I've heard it gets real expensive real fast. Most trucks came with a 3.08 or .07?? (havin a brain fart) or a 3.73. Not too sure on the posi's but you should be able to pick up a whole rear end for a couple hundred bucks. I think ChevyDude did a rear ratio swap on his truck not too long ago. May want to PM him.

The price I got to rebuild mine with posi was right at $900. That was with new R&P and an Eaton diff., all new seals and bearings. For a leaf spring truck I would hunt one down from a later model truck.

I think your right about the gear ratio. I just know it's very high speed rear end. I was also having a brain fart when I wrote this. Sorry.

I was quoted $650 for a shop to swap out my 3.73 with a rebuilt 3.08. Not posi though.

I dumped 1400 into mine w/ new Eaton posi, gears, seals, brakes, bearings and axels.

I replaced the axles, seals, installed posi and 3.42 gear with the tools it was about $700.00 to my door. I run a 275/60/15 tire and it sings on the highway with the 3.42. I think a 3.73 will scream....
