How much? Posi rear end...

Any idea what a '71 (5 lug) 3.73 posi rear end fetches? My rear end just went out in my shorty and I'm looking for a rear end. Thanks in advance!

Not sure about a posi, but seen most of em go from 175 to 250, with most being closer to the 250 range. Thats why my truck is still a 5 lug front with a 6 lug rear

71-2 coil 3:73 are a little hard to find (most are 3:07), with a posi is getting real hard to find. You may have to go new parts, if you have the housing/axles.

I have found a posi. I don't know (until I go look at it) whether it's a 3.73 or not. What would I expect to pay for either one? The guy is wanting me to make an offer and I don't know if he knows what it's worth. What would top dollar/bottom dollar be?

We have been playing the "how much do you want for it.....how much do you wanna pay" game and he has finally named his price. $150.......posi......but he doesn't know the gear ratio. Whaddya think? It's under a '71 Cheyenne or Cheyenne Super. The only thing he can tell me is that the glove box door reads: heavy duty rear spring and positraction rear end.

They should have a stamp on the housing, if they gears are original we dont know. I wouldn't buy a rear end without pulling the cover at least not over $20. The division rate should be stamped on the ring, or count the teeth on the ring and pinion and divide, or if you can spin the tire and see how many times the pinion turns to check the extremes between three and four.

Tommy

EDIT: If I had to guess in a 71 or 72 cheyenne I would say 3.08, I am not sure but if you go over 3.73 do you have to change the carrier.

I've never really liked the idea of redrilling the axles, plus I would like a 3.08, or is it 3.07, I can never remember which is car/truck....

I'd definatly pull the cover on the rear, check for slop in the gears and wear. 150 is a danged good price. Even if it is a 3.08 you should be able to resell it pretty easy, I know I'd buy it if shipping wouldn't be killer.... To answer the ratio question, if the truck was a cheyenne chances are it was a v-8 automatic and the majority of v-8 auto trucks were 3.08's

for $150 i'd take it, even if it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I'd save it for a future project or sell it to someone on the board
