ignition key cylinder replacement

About 10 years ago, a key broke off in the ignition. No problem, we used a screwdriver to turn it. Now that I'm bringing the ol' girl back to life, I think she deserves to have a real key! In searching this and other sites and talking to people, I figured I could do it.

Went out and bought the new cylinder. turned to acc, used a paper clip to push the little hole in, turned more to the left. Nothing. WTF! LOL! Apparently I am !!!!!!!!! ANyone know how to do this?

did it actually turn more after you did the paper clip trick?

Sometimes, the paper clip will get in the way. It's also better to use a small punch in the hole if you have one, sometimes the paper clip just doesn't do the trick. I push the little release button in the hole, and start to turn to the left, and slowly slide the punch/paper clip out while applying pressure to the left. It's worked for me every time so far.

Did you continue to turn it counter clockwise once the paperclip was in there? (I prefer using a small allen wrench myself)
It probably won't just pop out. Sometimes they do, but normally you have to pull on it and wiggle and Obscenities normally help too.

Yay, I just got mine out!

I bought a new ignition/key set last year and tried several times to get the old one out without success. Reading this inspired me to give it another try. I felt the spring depress, clicked it to the left, gave it one little jiggle and it was out. I was shocked, I don't know why I didn't get it out before or what I was doing wrong, but my new keys are in now. I think the jiggle was actually the trick that got it out, in previous attempts I was just pulling on it. This time as soon as I jiggled it, it released.

Reading this thread encouraged me to try and replace mine, too. Without success... Now I am cussing the truck, the locks(old and new), the heat and Longhorn Man.

Just kidding (About cussing Longhorn Man, everything else, I stand by my cussing!)

My boss, err wife, used to cuss me all the time, too. So I parked a rusty old truck in her driveway! Now she really has something to cuss about!

Seriously, any advice for a removing the cylinder from a 68 that does not have an accessory position?

Just keep turning the key to the right with a slight amount of pressure and it should pop out as you push in with the paper clip.

Alright, thanks guys. It's round three this afternoon! If I can't do it today I'm just gonna' put a chain on the screwdriver and call it good. Keys? We don't need no stinkin' keys!!!!

on a 67 or early 68, just insert the key, and in the OFF position, install the paper clip or what ever your poking tool of choice is, and depress the spring loaded plate..then turn it counter clockwise.
