If he doesn't use it, won't he have to get another ECU or flash that ECU with a model year program that had the cable driven throttle body instead of electronic? I didn't know MSD had come out with a coil but at $75 per I think I'll pass. And as far as the thread for Street & Performance that lilred67 provided, they have some good stuff but a lot of it is a lttle on the high side (price wise). And Rob, like was mentioned, not a super deal but not bad either. I would compare it to buying a crate engine also. Get it and one start saving for one of the new 6L80E's. Throw the Shrifter on there and drive the crap out of it..... Sorry, I get carried away.

No you can reflash the PCM and modify the harness to go to a cable TB. Alot of the hard core vette guys do this. It eliminates alot of computer problems/trouble that comes into play when you get some serious power adders and big cams.

Does anyone know if you can buy software to program the computer yourself? I don't like the thought of spending $300-350 to have someone change just the tires size/gear ratio and remove egr. I think we have enough people on this board that are interested in doing this that it might be worth buying the software.

No tunercat has not released theirs yet.

There are many options however they are VIN limited.

LS1Edit
HPTuners
AutoTap EFI Live
Etc

LS1Edit is the most common and is $550 for the programs and 2 VINs I believe and around 4000 for a dealer license.

I'm pretty sure that is only one VIN on the price for LS1edit. It's not the easiest to use for a first time tuner but it does work quite well. I have no working knowledge of the others.

Actually it's $450 for one PCM and $100 for additional PCMs. They started to do that to keep up with HPTuners. HPTuners is pretty much exactly like LS1Edit except it is in color and has the ability to data log which LS1Edit does NOT! HPTuners is $550 but allows you to use 3 VIN's for 2 year models - or at least that is what they offered when it first came out.

I've used LS1Edit quite a bit and it's pretty straight forward but don't expect any help from the vendor's: www.carputing.com

Hi Rob

I have a 6.0L LQ4 with a 4L80E in my 72' GMC. The Truck is still under construction. But I can probably answer most of the mounting questions. Plus my previous and current daily driver trucks are both 6.0L trucks. I love the 6.0L and the 4L80E is about the strongest 4spd automatic you will find.
Like 68LSS1 Im using the f-body oil pan. I had the truck pan in and changed due to my low ride height. The truck pan hung about 3 to 4" below the front crossmember and was the lowest part on the truck. With the F-body pan its even with the crossmember. Keep in mind both 68LSS1 and myself are both running Fatman front suspensions. Im also running dropped spindles and have the fatman crossmember slid forward on the frame rails. My cab is a low hump and the transmisson is a tight fit. The problem area is where the firewall and cab floor meet. The pinch weld were they come together will need to be trimmed. The other option is to shim the cab mounts up slightly. I made my own motor mount adapters. I wanted my engine low and back towards the firewall. You might avoid this problem if you slide the engine forward a little as long as the oil pan sump can clear the cross member. I played with my mounting location several times to get it were I wanted. Keep in mind the trans is electronically controlled as well. To my knowledge Mega Squirt has no provisons for trans control. In my opinon the factory PCM is the best option at the moment. The cost of FAST, Accell and most others is too high. The factory PCM can be programed to accomidate most mods you may have planned. Spend some time at LS1tech.com.(the Best), LS1trucks, LS2.com, LS1.com theres lots of good info out there. The swaps are not cheap but I think you will be pleased.
I bought my engine and trans with all accessories, pcm, wiring harness etc. out a junkyard. The donor was a 2002 Chevy 2500 2wd. with 27000 miles. Cost me $2200. If you have any other questions give me a shout.

Firstgen is right about the LQ4 and LQ9 but the current Sierra Denali trucks and Yukon Denali's have the LQ9 345 hp engine along with 03',& 04' VHO version of Chevy and GMC 2wd extended cabs (Pretty rare), Chevy SS trucks. LQ4,s have the aluminum heads on 2001 and later and can be found in lots of Vans & trucks (1500HD, 2500, 2500HD, 3500)

I bought a 5.3 and 4l60e tranny with 18000 miles for 1500 dollars complete AC and all. I then proceeded to get a new harness (still have the old one) and computer reprogramed. I dont have any good pics yet but it runs real strong. I wanted a 6.0 but the yard didnt have any at the time
Good luck
Dave

I bought a LQ4 from work and will be picking up a 4L80 once the SO gives the green light. I was thinking to put that into my '51 or the '71. I don't think I could part the 402/TH400 combo out of the '71 though.
