1968 GMC Custom Value?
What's it worth? 1968 GMC Custom, LWB, Two tone Black & White, 327 V8 w/4bbl, Auto, Air, PS, PB, full chrome (factory chrome front and rear bumpers) 78K, no wrecks, very little rust, in family since new. My 76 year old father says sell for him. My guess is $6,000. Located in Newport, Arkansas 90 miles Northwest of Memphis, TN and 90 miles Northeast of Little Rock, AR. Pulled a boat with it 180 miles from Batesville, Mississippi to Newport, AR this past Sunday. I drive a 1998 Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 that's never been in the shop and never been stuck and it goes duck hunting, deer hunting and in the fields regularly.

Gary, the answer is "whatever someone wants to pay for it". You can check the bluebook value thru your local insurance people and will likely find that its worth much less than you expect. Look around for similar trucks for sale and see what they are asking.

I work for an outfit that owns a Chevy/Buick dealership and a GMC/Cadillac dealership, both in pickup markets. Their used car buyers agree that its worth $5,000 to $6,000 in the wholesale market, but I have found thay are always low.

Looks like a very straight original truck. Has it been modified any? Do you have interior pics? If it is a very straight and unmodified original with no bondo or dings someone may certainly pay $6000 for it but you may have to get into another area of the country for that to happen...someplace where there are no rust free originals like this. Just my .02!
Looks like an exceptional truck...why don't you just keep it and enjoy it? Got a son or daughter that will need to drive some day?

If you could post some more detailed photos, It would help in evaluating the value of your fathers truck. I for one would like to see a closeup of the hubcaps also the option tag would help.
What will help sell this truck is the originality.

I think you right on the money. Black is not that common a color on these trucks either. If you advertise the truck you shouldnt have a problem getting that much.

Interior is 100% original and shows wear equal to its 78K of use. Its a rubber mat and cloth bench seat interior in red, black and white. As far as I know there are zero modifications to the truck. The only thing that I can see that might be missing is on the upper right hand part of driver's side of dash; there is a round circular metal disc with two indentations, about the size of a watch face. I can tell it is original as there is a molded support for the disc, I just can't tell what it was for. There is no bondo or other body repair and there are no dings anywhere on the body.
I wish it had a thicker sterring wheel and tilt. Sorry, only one son, age 27, and he's a Hyundai driving, long-haired, liberal, tree hugger who doesn't understand those of us who love pickups. |

That is going to be a heck of package for someone...very clean and nice truck. Original hub caps and all! It is just what someone is looking for...they just don't know it yet.

Sweet lookin' truck. It would be great if someone from the board would give it a good home. Other than that, ebay seems to be the best place to sell a truck like this. Should bring a good price as clean as it looks.

Keep it!
If its been in the family that long, I'd keep it. There's a very good chance that you'll regret selling it in the near future. My 2 cents.

just fyi, the "watch size" piece in the dash is factory. The location is used for manual choke when supplied. Otherwise, the piece you referred to is basically a cover. At least this is what I have been told. BTW, Nice truck. I would keep it. It is so hard to find a clean, un butchered truck these days. |

That's a stunning truck. I hope you keep it.
Is that a factory paint scheme for a 68 GMC? It looks original due to the factory (I presume) stripe and white outline on the tailgate. It varies from the two-tone 68 Chevies in that only the back/top of the cab is white where all two-tone 68 chevies I've seen have been painted the entire cab top and A pillars white. Also the white below the trim was only seen on the 50th's in the Chevies as far as I know. I'd love to see some engine/interior pictures.

Hey Tom, I noticed that, too. So I got to looking around, and I guess GMC did that from the factory:

Yes you are right. All 67 Chevy's or GMC's two-tone were painted in top-rear only white. But every two-tone Chevy 68 (and later?) I have a picture of shows the A pillar white too. Any one have a factory 68 GMC two-tone picture?

OIC. Didn't realize the change between '67 and '68, thought it was a Chevy/GMC thing. Now I wonder if GMC did it in 68, too.
Tom, you gotta learn these "kids" sometimes (these trucks are older than I am!)
