I want big brakes,,,, HELP
I would like to figure out big brakes for my 72 2wd Jimmy. Is there anyone out there who has put BIG brakes on their truck. Wilwood, Baer SSBC do not have any upgrade kits, will have to be custom. The rears are easy, its the front Im having a challange locating.

One member, I can't remember his name, has Baer brakes installed on his truck. If I remember correctly it involved him shipping spindles to Baer so they could modify them and then they shipped them back fully assembled. I would like to do this too, but I lost the link. Hopefully he will chime in on this thread.

I have baer brakes. No close up pics, but there kit is the rear disc conversion, and the front they use McGaughy's spindles modified to have their rotors. They really STOP!
I also used a master cylinder and booster from a 1998 C1500 truck, and no proportioning valve. With my LT1 it goes and stops. Now for my personal opinion. The brakes look great and stop excellent, but I don't like how the caliper only grabs part of the rotor. My dad has Stainless Steel Brakes kit on his 61 Impala and they grab the whole disc. Also the emergency brake on the rear calipers is a pain to install and they don't really work anyway. If I did it again I wouldn't even hook-up the emergency cable and I'd just use a line lock if I really needed it. Just my 2 cents. |

Interesting opinion. when you say part of the rotor, are you talking the 2/3 1/2? I woul;nt think Baer would overlook something like that. Does your dads stop as good as yours?? If you where to do it again, what setup would you use?

Well. MY dad doesn't have his car driving yet. As is my truck right now. Both are completelly taken apart.
This is what I mean. Baer makes their front caliper I beleive and it "grabs" the rotor from the edge to the hat(where the lugs are). The problem is on the rear. They use rear GM calipers on most if not all of their rear brake systems. These OEM brake caliper are made to fully "grab" a 8.75 inch rotor. When you go to an 11 inch rotor it doesn't grab the entire surface, but however since it grabs further out from the center it does have more leverage, hence it stops well. But the pads leave marks on rotor where they grab and the rotor looks new where they don't grab. SSBC makes all their stuff and it looks great. But I've had problems dealing with both companies, so... I've put kits on a 2003 mustang, a 1962 bel-air wagon, and a 72 chevy truck. They are all good kits. In the same the SSBC kit looks good, and installed easy, but I haven't driven on it. Any more questions just ask guys, but I gotta go right now. |
