Just got my new (old) truck!!! - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Went today and picked up a '67 GMC 3500 flatbed for free! It has a 292, four speed and dual rear wheels. Not running now but should be in a few days. It needs total restoration, as the cab is very rusty. But the flatbed is in good shape as is the frame. I plan to make this truck my farm truck/occasional tow rig. Not sure what gears it has in the rear end. I'm guessing it is an HO72 axle. Still has the factory 18" split rims on it too. I will try to post some pics soon. I'm sure I will have lots of questions for everyone here as I am not too familiar with GM products. Kind of a Ford guy myself, but I couldn't pass up a freebie with a straight six in it!

Let me be the very first to welcome to the board!
Free is good... you just can't beat that.
Your flat bed, if original, should have the HO72 (more likely than the dana option that isn't always listed) and should have a 4.56 gearing.
Pics would be sweet...we all love pics.
Is it a 133 inch wheel base, or a 157 inch?
You'll get all the info you could ever ask for on here. We may argue about which answer is right, but you'll get answers.

Thanks for all the welcomes! The rear differential cover is perfectly round, not shaped like the traditional Dana axle, thats why I'm assuming its an HO72. And yes, I'm sure its not a V-6. 4.8L 292 L6. Did I mention how much I like straight sixes?? Anyway, I should have some pics soon, I have to download them off of my camera. It has the 133" WB.

Well, I know everyones been wanting pics so here they are

I have others as well, if you want to see specific pics, let me know. I got it running again, but has no brakes right now. The motor is in serious need of a rebuild as it knocks badly. It will do for now until I get my garage built so I can tear it down inside.

That don't look too shabby there. Scrub it real good, wax it, and a can of white paint on the wheels and grill...and it'll pass as a cool rig.
Interesting, i don't think I've ever seen wheels that looked like those ones. You may want to price tires before getting too attached to them though.
As far as the engine goes, you'd be hard pressed to pay more than 100 bucks for an inline anywhere in the country. I'm willing to bet there is someone within 25 miles of you just begging all his buddies to come get this inline out of the garage....and even willing to throw in a beer and load it up too.

That's a cool truck! It doesn't look too rusty, I can't see any rot through on the drivers rocker and the fenders look good. Those rims are awesome, GM used those same wheels on the 47-55 1st design trucks too:

Can someone explain to me the difference between the HO52, HO72, and H110 axles? Here is a pic of mine

I need to replace all of the brake componets front and rear. The truck has 13" rear drums, but everyone keeps asking what axle it has. I was guessing HO72. I noticed when looking up brake parts that 15" drums were available! Thats a big drum. Anyway, thanks for looking and hopefully someone can enlighten me. By the way, did anyone else notice that there are no shocks on the rear end? Thats the way it came from the factory. Pretty wild if you ask me.

The HO52 rears are found in 3/4 tons, they came with coil or leaf springs, the HO72 are for 1 tons and came with leafs only, and the H110 is for 1.5 ton C40 trucks or C30's that were ordered with 1.5 ton suspension. The 110 has a welded-on rear cover(not bolted on), and the axles are 10 lug instead of 8. Yours should be the HO72.
