My friend has a 1984 GMC C1500 pickup, and for some reason, his truck sounds better than ours exhaust wise.

His VIN: 1GTDC14H7ES524353

US, GMC, 5001-6000, 2WD, 1/2 ton, std cab, 305, check, 1984, st louis, PASN 524353

Our VIN: TCS347 (will find rest later)

GMC, 2WD, 454, 3500, pickup, (plant, build sequence #)

there is no way a 305 could sound lumpier and healthier than a 454..is there?

That is the funny thing about exhaust systems. You can build two engines the same and can have them sound different. Let alone the two modified engines and what they were build like and what's been done to it they will differ that much more.

Also how the exhaust is ran will make a lot of difference in sound.

gee, i wonder why this train will sound any different than my diesel economy car? of course they're going to sound different... single exhaust vs. dual exhaust, not to mention pipe size differences, the exhast characteristics of each engine are totally different, not to mention variances in ignition timing and valve timing, carburetor tuning, and then throw in emissions junk that the 305 has... take into consideration that the 454 was built for brute low end torque, while the 305 wasnt designated to be a torque monster. it is entirely possible for the 305 to sound meaner than the 454, even though which sound is "meaner" is totally opinionated. what may sound tame to one person may sound radical to another.
