how much hp, can th350 handle?

im having a 396 bb built up for my 72 shortbox, i want to install a th400 but not looking forward to getting a different yoke and gettting the shaft cut..... should i just stay with a th350? or is it worth the work to a th400? thanks!

I had one built for my Model A running a 6:71 blown 350 (ported heads and all that other crap)...680 horses.

My friend ran one in a lifted 77 4x4.. big tires, 500hp 454.. tranny outlasted the truck.

are you rebuilding the TH350? It's doubtful any of the one's mentioned are anywhere near stock. They can undoubtably be built ($$) to withstand alot of punishment. It also depends on how bad your going to treat it(just street tires or track/slicks...). For peace of mind I went ahead and swapped in a TH400, because I didn't want to be swapping transmissions frequently. Most likely, if you're talking about a cruiser/ street tire smoker, the 350 will be fine.

I have a T350 in this. 612hp, 738ft tq. Definately not stock but not too bad. $250 in the rebuild and $400 in the converter. Has a manual valve body, shift improvements, ect.

Make sure you get the heat treated sprag and drum no matter what.. The sprag is the weakest link in the Turbo trans. You also get to keep a little more power with the 350 over the 400. Go with the TH350

Run it!

Keep the 350 unless it acts up and then worry about an upgrade. I ran a stock one in a Buick Stage 1 455 with a slight cam with only a B+M shift upgrade kit and it lasted thru 2 drag seasons with 0 problems! I sold the car and it still snapped your head off on the shift points! Not too hard to change a tranny on a 2 wd.

Matt,
I am running a TH-350 on a 72 LWB with a 450hp 402. I spent about $450 on a rebuild and I don't anticipate any problems at all. BTW, I think you will need to have the drive shaft shortened as a result of the BB. You will want to mount it in the forward set of frame holes to allow maximum firewall clearance for the distributor. Good luck. You will love the performance.
