I Love Junk Yards!

I needed an idle compensator for my Edelbrock carb for when I'm using my A.C. Edelbrock lists it for $125. Got one off an old chevy and made my own bracket for it. Total cost: $3.48.

Junkyards are awesome, especially if you know the owner. I just got a set of free tow hooks off the front of a 1966 C50 dump truck. Heck I might even buy the dumptruck, some old man gave it to him for moving some old tractors around so I oughtta get a good deal on it. Straight six with a four speed, oughtta be a cool truck.

I was going to talk to him about letting me work in the yard as long as he wants so maybe it'll be an even trade. The truck is a rust bucket, but it's all original, even has the AM radio and all gauges and stuff inside. It sucks because the engine doesn't run. The water pump, pulleys, fan, and distributor are gone and I think the radiator was gone too. The tranny went through all the gears and it was tight, no slop in the shifter and the clutch felt good. The truck actually rolled backward when I pushed the clutch in so that's a good sign! That kinda scared the crap out of me, but what really got me was the brakes actually worked, when it started rolling I hit the brakes and it stopped. Even the transmission mounted parking brake worked. I'll see what happens this Saturday. If I get it I'll post some pics of it and my truck parked next to it.

I LOVE going to the wreckers! Even if I come home empty handed. One of our larger wrecking yards has a 67-72 pretty much everytime I go but..... you have to be lucky enough to be one of the first guys to get your hands on it (they get picked over REAL quick). And the checkout girls are "hotties" as well (lol). Doug

Do you have a better picture of the bracket you made I need to do the same thing and was trying to figure out how to mount a factory one.

The bracket is made of 1/8X2" flat stock. I had to hold it forward on the manifold to get the clearance I needed. Yoiu can see at the bottom where I cut it to move it forward. I used a tapped hole on my intake to bolt it down but you could maybe use a manifold bolt also. I know,I know, I need to clean my engine!

I bent a 90 degree turn to give me a surface to put the hold down bolt in the manifold. Then I bent an angle to the right, came up a little and bent another angle to the left. No magic here you just need to get the compensator piston lined up with the carb lever. Once you just get the flat stock bolted down on the intake you can hold the compensator up to your flat stock and see how much you have to bend it.

After you get the bend right you can hold the compensator on the flat stock and mark the location of the mounting holes. I slotted mine so I would have some adjustment to get the idle just right. The piston doesn't have to move the throttle lever very much. The total overall height of this bracket cant be more than 5 7/8 with my carb manifold and air cleaner setup.(My air cleaner just touched the top of the bracket so I got a thicker gasket for the top of the carb.) You might see how much room you have from the manifold to the bottom of your air cleaner before you start. You may have to notch the bracket on thecompensator itself to clear the carb linkage but thats no big deal.

Nice lil bracket you made there! I like the left over radius that was left over from the notch you cut. Looks very good. Thanks for the tip. Another thread for my A/C file. I might suggest you post this in the FAQ's and have Krue link it to his A/C index file.
