Both my front and rear sport bumper have rectangular notches cut out of them on the bottom. Any idea what that was for?? It looks like they came that way.

They used to have jacks back in the day that fit into these slots. You will also see them on the 67-69 camaro/firebirds and just about any other vehicle from that era. The jacks I'm talking about had a flat, seperate base and a long metal pole-looking thing that the jacking mechanism worked off of, you used a tire iron to operate it. My dad used to have a bunch of them, but he tossed them all for safety reasons, they tended to tip over a lot.

That makes sense...thanks. My Blazer never had a jack in it, so I would have never made the connection.

I found this pic on ebay of one for sale, says its for a dodge, but thats basically what all vehicles came with for a jack in the sixties, seventies....Jack on EBAY

I've changed many a tire with bumper jacks. Was a nail-biter every time. Nothing like propping a 2,000 pound weight up on the end of a rickety pole.

Bad thing is I remember being young (AND STUPID) working under a vehicle only supported by that thing.

On an intelligent day I may have used a cinder block and the jack. Sheessh. Boy am I glad I am still here to say dumb things.

yeah those type of jacks were real dangerous/ not to mention the damage they did to the bumpers and mounts and grills and fenders etc

My Dad has one of those jacks in the trunk of his 53 Buick roadmaster, it was an all original car so it's probably the original jack. I keep an old HiLift jack in the bed of my truck, and a 4 ton hydraulic jack next to the seat where the factory one goes on the pass. side. I've had to use the hilift before under the back bumper to swap the tires out and it didn't look very safe!

Only problem is that is NOT what these trucks came with at all.
They came with a twist type mechanical bottle jack.
The only thing I can think of on the notches is maybe they had one stamping for the bumpers, some got chromed, some got paionted. And maybe the tow hooks were placed there on the painted ones.

I used one on my 75 monte carlo years ago. I found out that when letting jack down if you got it started the weight of lug wrench would jack itself down real fast.I was showing a buddy how to do that one day and the lug wrench flew in the air and put a big dent in my dads hood. I was grounded a week.
